The game has auto-aiming. If the reticle is touching the crosshair, the fire goes to the center of the crosshair (otherwise it goes to the center of the reticle). By zooming out and making the target small, the reticle is always over the cross hair, so every shot lands on the target.
Zoom should be limited to 50% or something, enough to see around your own ship but no more
The ability to zoom in (for other purposes) would also be nice addition
' Wrote:I would suggest that turret zoom for gunboats is reduced to a certain distance. I would also suggest, (given that makes aiming easier) that GB gun speed is reduced. they will still be highly effective against smaller vessels, but not overpowered as they are at present, while not having any impact on GB vs GB combat, or GB vs cap combat.
Fighters/bombers should not be able to use zoom at all. At present they can, I believe this is a mistake which will be corrected.
As it stands, fight between gunboats and smaller vessels are a boring boring boring boring boring boring stalemate, unless the fighters choose to break said stalemate. You simply sit a distance out of range and prevent the gunboats from leaving using disruptors, or you get in range of the auto-aim guns. Choice is simple, no?
Turret zoom on gunboats promotes a sort of stand-off fight. Denial of area, rather than combat. This is boring.
Isnt the problem a built in game dynamic where the physical area the game uses to "lock on" or track a target does not change when the zoom is used? So a 1/4 in square tracking spot remains the same then the zoom out makes the targets pretty much entirely fit in that tracking area? That seems to be the problem. I cannot hit mines or missiles normaly no matter how hard I try. In Zoom, they hit the mines and missiles often. That's the problem you're reffering to.
Sometimes, when all you want is to gain your freedom, you must be willing to risk it all.

Yes. It is that which allows gunboats to no longer have to aim their guns. Although it would seem you are trying to imply that nukes, missiles and so on are a viable counter to this. Is that what you are attempting to say?
In terms of a reduction of zoom - I was thinking reduce it to maybe 3 clicks, to allow for fast target changing, but to avoid the auto-aim issue.

Thank you.
As the best TSer around I find your word absolutely right.
I reached top of possibilities of using zoom and steer (Actually steer is useful, even without zoom. It would be cool for videos capturing) at ANY kind of SNUB vessel (yes, light fighters and bombers as well), and my conclusion will be the same.
Get rid of it.
The only vessels which should be able to use it must be: gunboats (20-40% of current length), cruisers, battleships and transports.
Bring some difficults in, so there would be new heights to be achieved.
