Sir, I used to pirate in a VHF exclusively. Let me just tell you that when you encounter 7 people in Advanced Trains that just-so-happen to have Armour Mk VIII, none of which want to Roleplay with you, and fire on you when you are typing, it does get to you, especially since you know that you can't get to these people through Roleplay, or big guns. It's not only disheartening ingame, but also in real life. I do know that I don't have to pirate them, but the opportunity to Roleplay is something I'd rather not lose, and it is rather disheartening to know that I did lose it....

that's not bad rp that bad judgement, come on mate 7 transports would(i believe) give a GB a tough time. just because your a pirate doesn't mean you invincible mate. But that did take b@lls the size of cannonballs to try that mate. my hat's off to you mate:)

A few things, joojoo. First of all, stop double- or triple-posting, it's quite pointless when you can edit your posts. Secondly, pirates need to be well-geared to take out traders, who use shields with high regen-rates, high shield value and very good weapons (Don't tell me that class 4 transport turrets are weak, because that is quite false). If the pirates can't defeat the trader, then the whole purpose of pirating is gone, since the traders know they'll win. A fighter is very easy to take out with a good transport vessel with good equipment; that's why you'll even see teams of pirates, because otherwise their prey could win a fight if they have any skill. The purpose of a trader is not to be able to destroy all pirates and be able to trade for free, it's to trade plain and simple. I hope I got my point across here.

EDIT: 7 transports wouldn't just give a GB a hard time, they'd obliterate it.

@ Baconsoda: Yes ... I'm well aware its not about money ... That's why I only ask for 500k while everyone else is demanding 15 mil. For me its about the role play as a pirate. Get tired of the traders that run silent while you spew pages of monologue. And I get annoyed with traders that dock on what should be hostile bases to their character. Like those Rheinland corporations docking at Naha for example. The most annoying one I've encountered continually ran silent about a dozen times on the Diamond/Niobium Run (using Chugoku as well). Since he never responded to my demands I took snapshots each time I made a demand (to defend myself if need be) and proceeded to destroy this trader each and every time he came through the NB jump hole. Musta destroyed the guy a dozen or so times and he just kept going without saying a word. He eventually logged out. But alas ... we gotta deal with people complaining about pirates over and over again. And everyone seems to think its A-OK for bounty hunters and others to cap-kill us pirates in mass.

So ... we get complaints about pirates in gunboats and bombers and yet praises for bounty hunters killing pirates in battle cruisers, bombers and such. I just don't get it. Role play anyone?

i agree with you mate. to me PvP is not killing a noob in a noob ship with your battlecruiser. to me PvP is ships that are equal so you would know it was skill, not better equipment that made you a victor. but then again it's not a pvp server, it's a RP server, and if you shoot a cop, your gonna have an entire force against you. that's the life of a pirate mate:(

double triple posting. mate everyone who's commented on this thread i've dedicated a post to thier ideas with ideas of my own(just like i did for you here)
secondly have you even seen my figures mate? take a look at my figures and if you disagree, bring your figures and lets compare notes.
i don't expect traders to be impervious, just saying using a Gb is overkill and imo not the best/easiest rp. i mean my liberty police id says i can have a cruiser or battleship, but how easily would i be able to rp that?

ok, first off. wicked amount of damage? compare a civ transport turret 4 to a gunboat turret, or a civ trans 4 turet to a lvl 10 gun. secondly, firing arcs? i believe so far the mining ship(the one you can buy at honshu) has 8 guns firing in one arc at all sides. the firefly(3500 cargo) has only 4 guns avail at one time on any side, i know the armored trans. has 4 turrets and 2 regular guns for forward arc. and i believe 4-6 for all the other angles, don't the GB's have thier turrets all avail for at least 1 side. now lets take a look at GB "shield Gunboat Positron Shield shield recharg=2200 shield cap=140000 compared to the best trans shield shield recharge=900 shield cap=100000 hmm side by side trans shield regen rate less than 1%, GB shield recharge rate more than 16%. I have never seen a transport(who's main purpose is to haul to make profit) install a capital armor upgrade(which takes up around 300 cargo space or more) i don't know anything bout the train disruptor miss rate, as many times that i was hit with one, i couldn't verify this. once again don't know much bout the 10 second thing, usually for me, it's hit by disruptor, then gb eats me alive before my cruise starts up again.

VHF vs. Transport, I'd bet on the transport either getting away or killing the VHF, every time (not getting away every time, but I'd bet on the transport every time, it's good odds).

Even vs. a gunboat or bomber, the transport has a reasonable (though perhaps not favorable) chance of escaping. All they need to do is to get into cruise and they're home free, and CDs don't always work.

A bomber or gunboat is almost necessary if you want to be a successful pirate, rather than a sometimes lucky pirate. Unless you always fly with backup, that is.

Gunboat turret damage vs. transport turret damage, and gunboat shields vs. transport shields, has no bearing on anything. They aren't equal, they shouldn't be equal, and just because they're not equal doesn't mean that the gunboat shouldn't be used for piracy.

Also, if you run into the LWB, we're setting up Behemoths with which to pirate. Best transports ever, those are...

and finally about the fact on pirates being bereated constantly. If pirates would stick to the ransom rules, no problem. but what i usually get is a pirate who will ransom me, then tell me if i come back again with diamonds he'll kill me or make me drop my cargo. or i am told to where i can and cannot sell my cargo. these don't sound like pirates to me, these sound like political soldiers. I'm new i'm sorry if your group gets constantly attacked. i'm just a newb tryin to figure out disco's idea of RP mate.

Now this sounds like a personal attack on me. If you have a problem with what you saw, you know who to PM, or which feedback thread to post in. I even did pm you. So I can see I'm just supposed to "2 mil r Dai!" huh? Yeah, a pirate with an alternative motive. Go figure.

pls explain how this fits in with a pirates RP. mayby i'm not understanding. pirates are supposed to be the bad guys, they're supposed to get money via quik street, pirates(from what i thought)make it a general rule not to engage navy personnel because there is no profit in it.(RP wise you kill a navy BC then your gonna have navy ships gunnin for ya. something a pirate doesn't want)

Uhm, I fly a Lane Hacker Gunship because.... I'm a Lane Hacker? How is that possibly not part of role-play? I usually fly in a group, and I'm the big guns. There's no such thing as "overkill" when pirating. The more firepower you bring, the more likely you are of taking over a ship. For example, would you be more likely to fight a single man with a baseball bat or ten guys with machine guns?... Obviously the guy with the bat. I have pirated people in a Dagger, but that's only because they played along. They could have laid waste to my ship without any trouble at all.

Before you start complaining about pirates flying gunboats, I want to see you flying a light fighter against a Heavy Tanker and get that guy to pay. He's going to wipe the floor with you. Have you even flown as a pirate, yet? Have you any experience pirating, at all?

@ joojoo1975: Ok ... I'm not going to address each and every point you're making here. But ... pirates are pirates. They're gonna pirate traders and avoid the law and the navy. My pirate will typically avoid pirating within a house system ... especially when the law or the navy is about. Thus ... I don't have to worry about them much. I usually only need to worry about the overzealous bounty hunters in their battle cruisers. So ... for that reason we're in gunboats and bombers. Bounty hunters in their capships don't last long against bombers. Its basic tactics ... survival dictates what tools you use. If bounty hunters came in gunboats and bombers ... most of your pirates might be in VHFs. But then you've got the traders in overpowering trasnports. The CT was specifically designed to survive in the outback. CTs were designed to defend themselves from pirates and such. As a result pirates need more powerful vessels to take them on. And since most pirates live in austere places where there are few friendly bases or planets to resupply ... it kinda dictates that we'd be in gunboats. Gunboats (role play wise) are big enough for us to carry supplies for survival in the outback. And trust me ... it still takes a gunboat a long time to whittle away most transports shields and hull. Transports carry plenty of bats/bots to survive long enough to get to a docking point. A gunboat has 1 shot with bats. When my shield goes down on my gunboat and I regen my shields ... 100% of all my bats are gone. I don't have enough to regen again. So when my shields go down the second time ... its life or death for me. I've either gotta get the trader, die or run away.

Just voicing here my 2 quick cents.

I've pirated in VHF and now I pirate in bomber. The only times I got paid in VHF were those when the trader decided to play along. If they were not playing along they just got away. There is absolutely nothing you really can do in a VHF if the trader decides to not to pay.

Two reasons: Either you have CD mounted and you can CD as much as you like, but really can destroy the trader. Or you can mount the mini and the guys just cruises away.

In bombers and GBs there are those absolutely essential things to successfully make the guy pay you.
Train CD to keep him getting away and SN to destroy the guy if he refuses.

Summa summarum: In VHF you can pirate only those willing to be pirated (i.e charity pirating). In bombers/GBs you can pirate everyone.

I can totally relate to the misunderstanding of why Pirates have capitol ships. I've just got on with the game and accepted that times have changed. You won't see me in a Capitol ship these days since that's not what i think FL's about, however they can be a great RP contribution and experience when it comes to organised events. I've always preffered the idea of being a fighter pilot, even if i'm not exceedingly good at it.

I believe pirates can vary their ship types and stick within RP suggested ships. An example of somthing i would concider "not right" (not exactly oorp) would be a hacker flying a Barghest. These days players seem to go for the guns and upgrades alot more than the experience. But some rules should be coming in in 4.85 that should bring a little more order to these sort of things.
