Or rather I could just as well ask you to explain me how getting caught every time by police for the mere sake of interaction makes a smuggler's roleplay any good.

And why the heck shouldn't I compare Disco to reality in this regard? Why the heck would Disco smugglers and policemen are in any way different from their real life counterparts? In case it is not meant to be a sci-fi environment, rather some fantasy with unicrons, fairies, magic and twisted, abstract logic, please enlighten me about those extra rules I apparently have no idea of. If real life definitions of "police", "smuggler", "smuggling" and related things do not apply here, please define them in the context of the Discovery Freelancer universe.

I'm seriously getting annoyed by all the random idiots pulling the "you can't just compare Disco with reality" card the moment they have no better arguement to support their point with. F*ck yes, I can.

The role wasn't designed that way at all, there is no mechanical or server rule impairment that stops smugglers from using lanes or docking with lawful bases, everything that the stops the role from being changed is the community, literally nothing else stands in the way as is such with many things in Disco it all boils down to how we treat each other.

A smuggler getting caught by the police can have superb RP, it has nothing to do with how successful the character is only how well it is portrayed. Ironically by staying away from anyone a smuggler could have absolutely awful RP but no one would ever know.

Comparing Disco, or any game for that matter, to reality is always a bad idea due to the need to cherry-pick aspects and gloss over obvious limitations, be it mortality, morality or the laws of physics which are all deeply connected to our actions and motivations. Instead try to explain your own idea of the subject, what aspects you find appealing and why you think they should be that way.

The Sci-fi genre's main feature is a universe with fictious laws of nature mixed with real ones, or as it's usually suggested, already discovered laws of nature filled in with ones we in real life did not discover yet. And the genre bases stories on that, barely altering anything else. Disco is no different, sure we have starships which we don't have in real life, multiple inhabited planets, hyperspace travel. But then we have corporations, lawful as well as unlawful entities, governments, authorities, rebels, pirates, terrorists, revolutionaries, drugs, slaves, metals, drinks, and like a thousand other parallel I can draw with the real world. There is no need to cherry-pick aspects, it has already been done the moment Microsoft and DA devs decided to make Freelancer a sci-fi game. What's unchanged here is human behavior. Totally based on real life, because nobody and nothing has ever suggested otherwise, quite on the contrary though.

But hey, if you are not fine with that, I ask you second time, define what "smuggler", "policeman", "smuggling" means, define the proper way to smuggle, the proper conduct of a policeman dealing with smugglers, and explain thoroughly how each participant of a possible interaction should behave, why they should behave that way, what are the motivations of each, etc. Define how and explain why all of this should differ from how it is in real life, and of course all of this perfectly in-universe, no exceptions. Perhaps if needed, you can also attempt defining vastly different and unknown ways of logic and present us mindsets non-existent on Earth. Yet.

I agree. If it was a "real-life sci-fi" (aka, Hard SF), there wouldn't be any fighters, bombers, carriers... just kilometer-long spaceships with kinetic weaponry, as laser-based weaponry being a very uncommon sight, perhaps except for PDS.

Most of classic Sci-Fi is just extension of the Midway-like tactics from WW2.

EDIT:
As for the roles, I kinda feel disappointed how corporations in Discovery have little to do with the government, while I suppose it is more likely that corporations would have more power than government, not vice versa. Kusari is the most finest example, as, until the coup, the government was entirely controled by Samura and Hogosha, according to the rumors. Nowadays, we have Kishiro as most prominent example of zaibatsu (as opposed to keiretsu), but no one takes advantage of that kind of roleplay.

Ye, kill the Gallic route. Move the best sellpoints back to Gamma/Alpha.

Because your question contains several misconceptions I was hoping you will realize after these wall of texts of mine. Well, you apparently didn't.

It is not required of them to avoid everyone, only those who seek to halt them in their job. In the case of smugglers these are lawful authorities, just like how pirates and terrorists are to lawful traders. As you see, they are neither the only examples of a "mouse" in a "cat vs mouse" situation, nor required to avoid everyone, and even the requirement itself is only a requirement of success at what you are doing. As I earlier mentioned, if you want to roleplay a smuggler who's a total failure, feel free to waltz in front of police patrols with your full load of contraband. And bear with the consequences.

So you agree, smugglers shouldn't be required to dodge lawfuls in order to be successful and the only reason they are pegged as such is player enforced. Glad it only took 2 pages worth to get to it.
