Yeah I'm going to agree with the last two. Although it may not be easy for a fighter to take down an armored transport with its guns blazing, there really is no chance the transport can make it out alive. Call them what you want, but a fighter is a combat vessel, and a transport isn't. Hiring a escort is really the only option when it comes to a trader defending themselves against any sort of determined enemy. So just hire an escort, we need the business anyway.

Even so, as P Funk said, those damn NPC's are a hassle for anyone when crossing systems. Maybe give NPC's pretty useless CD's? :D

@ Jinx

Ok instead of the airbus try the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy..

Even a heavily armoured military transport would not be able to outrun or defend itself against 1 single fighter.
As you pointed out though all it would take is one shot from the fighter:D

What chance does picture number 2 have of escaping picture number 1?

Measly fighter?
Thats not an apt comparison. If you haven't noticed, the way ship armor works in FL is not at all the way it works on planet earth.

Secondly, all ships fly at the same speed at cruise, not true on earth.

Earthly analogies are not apt at all in specific. In general perhaps. But the game mechanics don't always match up.

:lol:If the figther is coming from the Great War or WWII then the Galaxy can run away very easy.

Seriously i have to agree. If traders want to withstand pirates they have to hire an escort.

Granted but I still beleive that when the captain of a civillian transport sees a heavily armed fighter class ship approaching on his scanners it should be in fact, trouser filling time :D

I agree as well. Its just that I think it should be somewhere in the middle. There should be a real possibility that the trader can get away. Not all civilian pilots are complete cowards and bad at evasion. Not all pirates are good either.

Plus its a game. There should be fun for both sides. I don't want my portion of the fun to be limited to "well you're making lots of money so shut up". Thats not very good. Its almost encouraging us traders to be lax in RP.

Ok I agree some pirates are worse than others and some traders are good pilots but I am of the opinion that this way promotes better RP. It encourages you to hire an escort and to "fly smart" i.e you know there are pirates up ahead you avoind the lanes you vary your routes. If a pirate happens to be camping a Jump point and you do not have an escort then you have been caught, simple as that.

Dont get me wrong P Funk, I have a pirate! I also have a trader char and usually always pay a "tax" if I meet a pirate. The only time I do not is when the demand is stupid. Like a pirate trying to extort money out of me in front of a house planet or when I am over 10k away and they have no chance of stoping me.

Well it's not really impossible to escape from a fighter in a Transport....

I pirate in a bomber... now I fought a Container transport with good turrets and 100k shield.

So what I have to do:

1. Keep CDing him when tries to cruise
2. Wait ages for the Supernova to recharge while keeping his shields down... means you have to shoot him in the meantime
3. Evade fire from his turrets
4. Keep RP asking him about money/cargo.

Is this easy? I don't really think so. Especially when I'm so nice to offer him more chances to pay.

Out of some 15 attempts - 2 transports escaped me.... both times it was in S13 and they simply managed to fly to the nearest explosive cloud, before I took them.

Now this was in the most agile bomber in the game.... that is going to be nerfed soon.

I like this shift... and if it was my choice I would move it even more.
Traders should hire escorts... that will give the Mercs flying around something to do.

------
@ Jinx... yes I would really like caps + transports to have much bigger armor and no shields. NPCs don't have them.. it's really strange that players have. It would also make people think twice about taking them out to fight.... stop capship-whoring.

But somehow I feel that all their owners here will start screaming so loud.........

But then add shields to NPC capships as well.

One more thing - Nomad fighters/GB/BS - why do they have shields? That's even more strange.

AMEN!! Hire escorts!

When was the last time you've seen an NPC transport without escorts?!? I think it's great, a transport shouldn't be able to get through the border systems without protection, and in house systems the navy and police are there to assist. This should really increase RP in my opinion. It will also make business great for mercs and maybe even a possible escort service could be started by someone. RepEx may be willing to hire out their security division for a fee...

well....haven't noticed any difficulty...
the damn things can and will dodge cds...
try swatting them with your tail
works like a charm.
also, if you hear 'incoming missile' its probably a good idea to engine kill....nobody expects a train to fly in reverse at 340 m/s, chainfireing 7 adv debby turrets and fireing train cd's into their nova torpedos.

what I have found:
1: cm need to be spammed....you should restock at every time you land.
2:asteroids work wonders...great for counfounding missiles...everyone expects to be able to outmaneuver a transport...oh, and, 'bouncing' of of rocks makes you rather unpredictable.
3:threats help...no one wants their entire faction bountied...and the entire npc affiliation...people back off and apologize
4:Mercs...pay them per kill, but don't hire enough to make it easy, you want an hour, 2 hours of these mercs keeping the pirates busy, or, pay them per successful pass.
5: comms chatter is fun....distract them...sophie is a great at it...talks RM into defending her through Rheinland:$....
