Ive been looking at the heavy tanker and it does seem to fit the bill fairly nicely. Anyone had any experience with it?

I've been shopping around as well...
As for those who say "wait until 4.85 to buy a big ship,"
How will we know that capital ships won't just be way more expensive? Ship prices do seem to increase significantly with time from what I've heard.
Anyways, the point was made earlier that Mercs and FL's can't go larger than a gunboat in terms of capships, although you can get a transport...
However, if you are willing to make a zoner or BH, you can get a cap ship, according to the rules.
There does seem to be A LOT of animosity towards BHG cap ship holders these days, though.
Although I haven't used the Heavy Tanker myself, there are a fair number of people who use it regularly, so that indicates that it's a decent ship to use.

Heavy Tanker? Good at one thing, and one thing only. Making lots of cash, very fast. It's a massive target, and it turns so slow you may as well just get out and find another one going in the direction you want. But, it does have the right image for a carrier. It's in the region of 96 mill, so you might want to think about that too, and I don't think FL ID allows transports that big in 4.85.

Well "poor man's" is just a saying, I can eventually get all the cash required for it and its upgrades. Im not to concerned with maneuverability either, but the ID problems are giving me pause. Ill probably just wait until 4.85 before I buy anything so I can see how things will work out.
(Sneaks off to steal a liberty carrier)

No, you are not stealing an Atlantis-class carrier anytime soon -_-...
I think the LN understood their mistake when Osiris was stolen, they certainly wont let another next-gen warship get stolen!
Well, a Freelancer typically works for themselves, I don't see why they would need a ship that can hold ships.
But if you're really into the idea, I'd say, make an IMG or some non-house faction and buy either an Albatross [If you are IMG], or a Talarca.
A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.
I am pretty determined to see this idea through, but like I said it needs some more thought on my part. The ID's are a bit problematic so i am going to have to come up with something to fix that part also. And I really dont think the LN's rep could take much more if I did take off with their carrier so ill leave them alone for now:P
