I'll be playing both Star Citizen and Freelancer. (nerd) I'll bring the goodness that is the Sirius Coalition and spread it's ideals to the poor un-informed citizens of SC. (smoke)

Yes, because Battlefield 3 killed the Battlefield 2 servers. Age of Empires 2 servers totally died when AOE3 came out. Rome TW servers died when Medieval 2 came out. Whenever a new game comes out active servers suddenly die because there's something new.

And those games weren't almost a decade old when their sequel came out.

the number of times disco has been dying. well...

Its down to about 80 players these days, which is around where it was when freelancer multiplayer started suffering in general, and players of other servers started fleeing to the bigger stronger ones...

But disco could be dug back up and revitalized, just by some advertising cross platforms. its a fun game. the humans will play it. I still think there should be only one system per house.

Star citezen looks cool, though.

One of the first threads I posted it, is one from 2007 in which you say disco is dying.

i would love it if the devs took another look at the game-world. it is simply way too large. when population are at its lowest (50-60) everybody is sitting in either NY or Conn because it's the only way to guarantee player interactions. You'll have to metagame and cross 5 empty systems to find someone, and by that time they will have left or logged off unless you go where the bulk of people are at.

i know systems cant be deleted from the mod without corrupting people's characters, but is it possible that jumpholes and gates just go poof? In all honesty I'd like to see a half or perhaps one third of the systems gone at this point, and there would be an even bigger need for it if server pop decline. You can stick some EVE-like sci-fi explanation on it to make it credible, and tissues could be handed out to those who go "not this system its very important for my faction"/"not this system I made my first kill there"/"not this system i used to cyber with a guy pretending to be a girl there" etc. Nostalgia has an enormous presence on the disco server, but its not something one should necessarily pay any heed too.

You just force player to clump up together in other systems. I don't think that will change anything. Devs could delete New York and i would hear the protests to the other end of the earth. Forcing people to play in the vanilla systems also doesn't look very good on my part of view, since it was the new systems and factions that brought new life to discovery (it's still the most wanted Fl mod i think). Also if people want to play together, they can. Every house gives the oppurtunity to play as any character in them. The only reason would be increased server capabilities aren't enough to handle and lags define the outcome of fights or general gameplay.

well there's no fun spending weeks developing an Outcast character for Gallia when there's no traders to rob and no locals to make ties to. Or rather they are there, one lonely trader 4 systems away from you and one lonely Brigand doing missions 6 systems away.

It's not just Gallia, its all over the map, even in vanilla house core systems.

Because it is so big people are forced to either go together as a group and say "hey lets hold hands and play together" (which really isnt ideal at all) or create characters from a select handful of ID's because of their ZOI (or lack of) ensures other players present to interact with.

If the map was smaller, a wider variety of ID's/players would be able to interact, as well as allow for less travel-intensive player encounters. Some of that joy and fun from Conn would be infused into the game when you can undock and interact with players in your immediate vicinity, making it less tedious and chore-like to achieve anything.
