As someone who lives not only in a post-soviet country, but also at the very border of Russia, I can say that here Ladas, especially NIVAs are not only a very common sight, but also a rather favorite vehicle to use. Since a small town is rather limited in terms of snow removal, a rather low-weight 4x4 is not only a good choice because of its reliability on the road, but also due to the fact that the niva is generally very cheap to repair.
I have a VW Passat for the same reason, the less electronics onboard, the less of a chance that they can fail, and it oes hand in hand with low maintenance costs.
The fact that the Niva is still being produced only shows that people are still interested in simple offroad vehicles.

Not only that, Niva is genius in its class. It beats even the newest completion and it is also may be the best off-road vehicle for small money ever built.
The older 2105/7 are not bad cars but there is no point in having one nowadays. They have zero comfort and also they eat too many fuel, not to mention that you have also bad chance to fix anything if it gets broken.Down there finding spare parts for such old model Lada would be quite challenging.
I personally would go with Niva because it is neat little beast. Also there is good chance that you can buy new one since they are still in production and get it shipped. You just need to go to youtube and search for the Niva and you would be really fast in love, it is brutal grinder- snow/mud/water it just moves everywhere. Also there are some infos: http://www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/clubs.htm

I gonna get from my friend a one soon, VAZ 2106. Wasn't used since collapse of the Soviets(parked in garage), so it's in good shape, even the body. So it's 25.000 Rubles, about 625 euro.
Had plans to get VW Passat B3, but I wanted to start my driver experience from the classics
Rear drive, yay!

Absolutely disagree. Change seats on 6/5 from 7 and it's like to drive on sofa It's eat not too many fuel - 7-8l per 100km of mixed driving.
