I also follow the general "acting instead of writing" approach - for my sole and only char i have defined a set of character traits, morality , interest and all that character stuff in my head, then he gets thrown ingame and i see what happens- that way you can follow a red string without having to preplan anything and at least during gaming it feels more flexible and organic- and it protects you from hitting dead ends, too - after all you never know how to get your story ingame or if the otehr players will simply nont play along your ideas(they never do Big Grin) ....
If other chars get "really" involved it is good to get some kind of gentlemans agreement oorply and tehn get back to freeform rp again, at least for me this worked best so far...

What am I trying to say is that storyline is a thing that explains past (thus, present actions and their purpose) and aims player at the future.
I am not saying that interaction in game must strictly follow what was been written, I just want to say that according to the storyline your character will be at X place aiming to do Y thing, but regarding to the situation. Storyline is just a plan, but not a scenario.

But both ways are legit - either you have a plan to achieve something in your live, or you just flow on its waves...
I just want to make roleplay deeper, I am here for roleplay, I didn't have it for a while.
But the problem is in the "idea" part.

Yeah I can respect that Swallow. One thing that might help you to cook up a few ideas is to put down what you enjoy in Disco and not just roles but interactions, maybe a certain region or faction you prefer, maybe something you want to try in particular. You know, break it down.

Well - you background that lead up to the "start" of the Char ingame can be as deep as it needs to be or as deep as time permits it.
By no means i wanted to critic Swallows way of rp ing - in fact i do it similarly, just call it differently^^

Feel free to criticize my words if you think I am wrong. I want to find out the solution, that is.

@Croft: Well, I've been playing in Corsair playground since 2010, but so far I have no idea on how to push the roleplay further. Usually flying around southern Omicrons and Omegas, communicate, roleplay, fight if neccessary... But mostly I am just flying in search of people. I am not used to roleplay a bad guy, pirating is not what I like, so I have no points to fly anywhere. What else to do? Simple shooting does not allure me as well. I lack any sense in that process.
Numerously tried to fly the FL, but once again - without sense there is not much fun flying around.

At first I want to say, that I enjoyed reading everyones approach in this thread, it was quite interesting.

Now on to me.
I personaly can't point directly at specific inspirations. Characters just appear in my mind, maybe because I heard a song or I just happen to think a specific frame of a character would be interesting to play. Usually with a specific mindset, morality, interests etc. pretty much like Rodnas described it. That's also how I approach playing my characters, by acting.
When I create characters, my first concern I think about is, would I as a player enjoy interacting with said character? If the answer is yes, I just try it ingame and see if I enjoy acting that role as well and if I am even able for my standards to do it well enough.
Works? Great! I have a basic character set up!

Then there come things like background and such. Not only to explain why the character is how he/she is, but also to have more guidelines for more specific situations. "Oh my character was born on Manhatten, so he/she probably is used to the corruption of the LPI and won't be surprised about paying a bribe, unlike maybe someone with a gallic background who just arrived in Liberty the first time."
One other major point for me are weaknesses, I don't like my characters having no weaknesses - they make them way more interesting. Usually those come, when my mind has made up at least the frame of the characters background. Characters for instance can be dumb, easy to panic, forgetful, struggle with their job, cocky and whatnot which all can turn against the character itself and may influence the character in doing or saying things which everyone involved may have a laugh at or maybe a good enjoyable facepalm.

That's usually a process of months for me.

I could probably go on and on and on about this topic, but let's stop for now.

This is very true, and maybe weaknesses are one of the most important things I think about when attempting to make a character.
Though, like strengthes there shall be not to much of these, so everything look realistic.

What about the Bundschuh? Flying around RPing with people trying to overthrow the rheinland gov and incite rebellion. Theres a lot of scope for diffferent characters, high class political activist all the way to working class rebel. Plus it has an interesting goal that can be interpreted in many different ways.

Am I in the ballpark with something like this or have I got it wrong.

Fantastic post imo. The two bits above are ones I think everyone should bear in mind - not having all/any of your characters know the full extent of what you know is great and so insanely rare. Think about rl. A huge percentage of people in sirius will just not care at all about 90% of the stuff in the game, little jonny from honshu is not going to have a finessed understanding of the various unlawful groups in Rheinland, and he isn't going to feel guilty about that either.

And yeah, weaknesses. Characters without weaknesses just aren't compelling. Think about any film or tv show or book and any character you care about in it. And not just character weaknesses, but also things that can make it a little more difficult for yourself while fleshing yourself out. Who has ever met, for example, a trader who just wants to keep his head down and doesn't actually sympathise at all with any of the myriad unlawfuls trying to pirate him. Maybe he likes to eat paste because it's cheap and doesn't spoil on long space journeys. Maybe he really wanted to go on a safari on Gaia, maybe he thinks you should get real jobs instead of moaning about how you all got fired like 130 years ago.

Slightly related, but I wish more people played their character instead of their faction/ID. Remember that Outcast and Corsair who made out on Yanagi? Never met a Corsair or Outcast in game who seemed like they'd be open to that. The faction is your boss or your parents or whatever, they don't own you. You can work for a faction you hate (don't tell me none of you have ever done this irl), you can be corrupt or lazy and let things go that you "shouldn't" as a member of your faction.
There was some guy years ago who had an RFP character in the official faction. He got messed over in a powerplay or something, was head or 2ic I think, but then got sidelined in rp. So his RFP character quits in a rage and joins the Bundschuh. I thought that was awesome, not some guy thinking about 'my RFP guy' or 'I want a bundschuh guy,' but just rolling with the character and seeing where that goes. Even better for me since I had a Bundschuh that met him when he was on both teams, which was some quality roleplaying times.

As for the stories, they materialise (or don't) as I'm writing them. Most of the time I don't have anything planned when I start, it just develops as I write.
