Indies are instigators most of the time, they make people do stuff, sometimes its stupid and vastly OORP stuff sometimes it leads to a great RP opportunity to move the story along. Its a double edged sword, plus its nice to be able to relax and goof around once in awhile.

I think the question is more "How much influence do indies have on the server compared to official factions?"
It's wrong to assume that indies are immediately inferior when you know they're not a veteran player. They're good for the server simply because they offer RP ideas that are outside of canon expectations for the faction they have chosen to play a part of. What Tyler has stated is partly true in that official factions are expected to run some kind of tight-knit operation whenever they're present, yet are not given the rights to act out of canon RP if the situation arises.
It's not really a problem you can solve without great pain and argument by agitated parties but really, indies start off as indies and may join factions, choose not to and follow their own story or get sanctioned for being stupid. That's kind of what that system's there for, after all. If they have a valid point however, why shouldn't they be listened to? Just because they don't have a telltale combination of letters on their name that dictate authority? Nah, I'm not supportive of that kind of arrogance. I get that official factions exist to create some kind of order and hierarchy but they're not the be all and end all of every situation.
That's my hungover, slightly confusing 2 cents anyway.
Positive ideas/roleplay from indies should obviously not be ignored but encouraged. We need more active, good and creative rp. It does not matter who does it.
If indies screw up and their actions would mean damage to their ID/the official faction, their actions are ignored. That's their "secure" status of indies, which is a good thing.
At the moment, I think it's done like I described it.
I know no faction at the moment that would be prepared to take a hit for something that their indies did. And I hope that few would reject cool initiatives/ideas by indies.

So basically only perks and no repercussions for indies, is that what you want, Jack? Be rewarded if they do something good and be ignored if they do something wrong? For what? I mean, of course we should reward good RP wherever it might come from, but if we go and reward everybody equally, why shouldn't everybody be held responsible for their actions equally? Why shouldn't we punish indies just like how we would punish faction members for the same wrongdoings, if we reward them the same way if they do good?
Unbalanced treatment is not something I am really fond of.
Yes but in most cases indies are ignored on "the larger scale" and don't really see the same call to arms which having a faction (official or not) in a system. People scan over indies in the online players list whilst saying doing trade runs. You see some guy in New York, so what? You see the same guy but with say a K'Hara tag and you get "OH MY GOD EVERYONE ALL THE BATTLESHIPS EVER LETS GO RAAWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRR"
Extreme example I know but it's the one I've had the most experience with

I think what Jack meant wasn't that indies are not held responsible or face consequences for their actions, but that OFFICIAL factions will not be held responsible for the actions of their indies.
Othwerwise, of course indies should also be rewarded for good RP.
no indie, no interest! ex:i'm just an indie , sure it's not a good exemple, but it's true! without indie help, sometime, the officials are not enought strong to stay safe.
an indie can attack too! (when he want)
the question could be, which faction need indies? ex: 12 rha indies, what for rheinland military? etc etc...

Who do you hold accountable for an indie's actions?
Who do you hold accountable for an official faction member's actions?
