Until 17th of October, all ships that are currently flyable are available to everyone with access to Arena Commander.
This includes Aurora, 300i, 350r, M50 and Hornet.
To be nerd comes pricey sometimes. However the other nerds that would crew the bird are quite happy.

The most enjyoable part of the whole story is the minimum crew of 23.
This would be quite brutal space pirate chariot.

Pretty much just Arena Commander for now and probably quite a bit of time in the future.
It's somewhat similar to Connecticut, yes. There's also PvE mode and racing mode.
It can be fun but the Aurora is probably the hardest ship to fly and also the weakest and slowest (unsurprising).
They are also often changing the flight and combat mechanics to test different variants.

Currently it is not worthy to play it at all. Too much changes and patches. I wont play it till the SP misisons at all even as gold member I have acess since alpha lanuch.
However buying promo stuff now is worthy/cheaper then later especially LTI stuff for PU.

A hard decision that I solved by buying them both. Even if one of them flops, there's still the other one.
Currently (something like beta) there are more stuff to do in Elite but the overall opinion on the forums is that it gets repetitive fast. It's far from feature-complete at the moment.
It looks like Frontier is being forced to release the game this year, in an incomplete state, and update it gradually. Still has way more stuff than SC, though.
But I like the flight model of Star Citizen better even in its WIP state. Way less airplane-ish and is faster paced.
Got the game, been playing around with my Aurora in Arena Commander and killed some dudes. It's got missiles!*
I gotta say, I am positively surprised by the combat. Really surprised, actually. Granted, I have only tried one ship with one loadout, but it was a lot of fun.
The game also runs smoothly on older-ish hardware*, and using mouse+keyboard works just fine.
So yeah, looking forward to 2020 when the full game is released.
*Psst devs, SC knows how to implement missiles in PVP: You have very limited ammo, so you have to make the missiles count, you can't spam them either because they will miss. It's an extra bonus up the sleeve / a good finisher and that's all - it's not a source of sustained damage, like in Disco.
** All things considered... I get 40-50 frames on an i5 / Radeon 7950.
