It's coming back, it just needs a bit more time to cook to actually work as intended. Rep is a core mechanic of the game, characters should be expected to engage with it.

Oh no.
Other than the news of this awful mechanic returning, all of these fixes are excellent.

I am withholding my pointing finger and yelling of "COWARDSSS" ... for now. Powertraders deserved the bat to the shins.

I get that, but then you'll chip away at the advantages of Zoners, Freelancers and Smugglers, no? Or will there be a mechanic to allow them to befriend certain factions WITHOUT aggroing the others?

This is a bad change and it should stay gone. Equipment sure but cargo should be omitted from this. Stop breaking core gameplay loops and leave trading as is.
Edit: ...and before anyone says it, this is coming from someone who only trades to and from POBs and does not do normal trading from NPC stations. Just because I don't like a change does not make me a silent power trader
You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. The Banished Legion | Astral
Hopefully it'll perform better when fixed. Cool concept otherwise. I'm guessing Smugglers could get an exempt from this mechanic, though? Or maybe give them a command of sorts to align their reputation with the faction they want to smuggle for.

Then why do you care then? Variety in possible trade routes between factions would be a positive change. Otherwise there's not much difference of which faction you trade with between the houses. It's also a good candidate for faction perks that enables a boost of trading activity for a certain NPC faction.
I like the rep requirement to haul stuff from certain factions
- Shipping companies finally get some love
- Smugglers have to just buy one rep and be fine (Yes, this might make you hostile to other factions, but such is life)
The only "bad thing" I experienced (As a Molly, Hessian, Coalition player) was that I had to buy bribes for my allies.
(Also, keep in mind that perfect rep chars were also a thing back in the days, and these chars were super expensive)
