I think Dab has some valid points: the main one being we must try to keep things fun for both parties. I note that fun doesn't necessarily mean that your character survives an encounter.
I suggest that we try to avoid discussing specific situations in this thread - if it continues to become a trial by forum then it will be locked.

Everyone read the above.. I said from the start; This is not a trial by forum from me, which means I won't tolerate others making it a trial by forum either.
What's with the bickering? 99% of this thread has nothing to do with the original topic, which puts emphasis on respecting players and makes no reference to a single event.
The other day I was bored in my Rogue tagged/ID'd Werewolf in New York. I was blasting NPCs because I hadn't quite gotten the hang of piracy yet and continued to fail at it. However, all the NPCs in my hold gave me an idea.
I hid in the debris field, and issued out a distress call on System chat of an NPC Navy recruit, John somethingorother. I forget what I called his last name. I then RP'd him giving the location, as well as a list of all the other NPCs in my hold, which included a BHG and a few VIPs and civilians. I then RP'd my character, Ketzel, discovering that he had escaped from the hold and managed to send out a communication, shooting him in the leg to shut him up. My character, smirking all the while, admitted it was true, and that since the opportunity had presented itself, offered up the whole of his cargo of NPCs for 1 million credits ransom.
A BHG indie found me, and after I gave him the BH in my hold for free, and the LN made it clear that they weren't going to offer to pay for the hostages and would rather let them die, payed the ransom himself. Which immediately pissed off the LN that was in charge, who declared him an enemy of Liberty.
It was very fun RP, and it was boring in NY until that time. Hopefully, some newbies who hadn't seen RP before got to see what happened, and hopefully, others got a kick out of hearing it.
Was this powergaming? I didn't mean it to be. The only thing is, I see it being somewhat similar to the Joker's RP with the Zoners, with the exception that with the Joker's RP he had previous OORP discussions with some Zoner players on the subject first.

I wouldn't necessarily call that powergaming. If you were saying you had another player's character in the hold, then it would be. However, you have to be careful when doing that, as it can be powergamed. Example; You go out and shoot 50 NPCs to 'capture' a bunch of LN and do it day-after-day, that may or may not be considered powerplaying. Regardless, doing that would be considered very bad form. The way you did it is fine though, at least from my perspective.
Just don't go shoot an Lib BS NPC and say you kidnapped a Fleet Admiral or something.. That ticks people off.
No, I will not be holding NPC hostages again. :) I was just bored and the only thing I would meet while I was downing trade lanes were BHG players and NPCs, so I came up with this little story.
The only thing that annoyed me a bit was that the LN didn't even attempt to negotiate. Just said that they don't pay terrorists, and that was about the extent of their RP. Fortunately, the BHG player RP'd well enough for the both of them. (Not because he paid the ransom, just his general RP. For example, after I gave him the BHG NPCs, he also demanded that I send over the injured LN cadet that I had shot.)

But that IS RP'ing... giving into terrorist demands just creates more problems. When the navy is involved, it's usually not a political matter, no? Maybe if you had picked a zoner, or house corporation it would be different, but you picked the navy. At least, that's what it sounds like from what you posted... sorry if that's not what you meant.
the LN acts that way because a large number of people have tried to " I IZ CAP EBIL!GIMME 20 MIL R I KEEL THE ADMIRAL!*screenshot off 200 LN Pilots and 3 fleet admirals* LOLOL I DUN NEGOTIATE BUAHAHAHAHAH"
Some people roleplay might push you out of your regular roleplay. In other words, they might damage your way of playing with their roleplay. I do not see anything evil here, but for someone this might not be very fun. The roleplaying should be that way. Intresting things happen then diffrent interests/rp clashes. The real interaction starts.
And if you don't like the ones who are messing your rp.. heh you always have SP. YOu can rp with yourself as much as you want, and no-one will disrupt you.
