You can use codes if you wish - if you can learn to aim with them, you'll be better overall with other weapons.
Or, go with the Furies. Less of a learning curve, and still very effective.
The Freelancer ID and Tag suits, just make sure you make your presence as an unlawful known once you start taking your first few hits on the authorities. Make sure you're red with authorities when you attack them, and ... yeah.

By that, I just mean don't expect to remain neutral after you've attacked/killed a couple of lawfuls. After all, once you attack one Military officer, the rest will know about it (in RP). In game however, there's often little communication between players in an npc faction. It just makes it a bit fairer (and you'll get less complaints) if you let them know you're unlawful.
The Viper is still considered a civillian ship? Good, good, I was planning on making a junker or a lawful freelancer with one but i thought it was shot down when i saw it on an IMG base.
