I agree with that , but I also think that it can be somewhat of an annoyance. Making these events really small might be for the best ( no hull damage , small shield damage, maybe a small powerplant drain, etc). Other than that , it sounds really interesting.
I like the general idea, though I'm not sure how many systems should have something of the sort. I'd think in the major house systems, they'd have a lot of good warning measures.
In some of the outlying systems, some interesting random situations would be quite interesting. The anti-cruise effect would be neat. Or in systems with radiation, if it could flare up to do different amounts of damage. Maybe something different in each system that would be appropriate?
Y'know, a simple solution to this is a weapon and a base.
An admin base with a weapon equipped that has say, 500k range. Huge shield damage, no hull damage and a CD effect etc.
Refire time of say 10 minutes.
If any player comes near that point in that system, it will fire.
It won't fire for another 10 minutes though.
Not completely random but some things like radiation storms, can be predicted sometimes. Those that sweep through certain systems like that Omega one with diamonds would be perfect, or the neutron star one.
It would need a player to go near the point though. The actual weapon etc would be invisible.
Yeah if it was specific stuff for a coulpe of systems, it would be cool. All kinds of mess could happen in omega 11, Galileo Kepler and Texas have all that dark matter, scary nomad systems and edge worlds have all kinds of bizarro geography.
The Corsair, who were supposed to get shipments of foods on our base, were ambushed by an Outcast raiding group on their way. 2 of the 5 tranports that were already loaded with food were immediatly destroyed. Falcatas and Sabres were overwhelming the Corsair escort, and the dark figure of an Outcast battleship could be seen in the horizon...
Crete immediatly received the distress signal from the convoy; one of the Corsairs finest battlegroup was sent to support the convoy. And just in time; the Outcast Dreadnought was already opening fire on the convoy, and the transports were becoming flying wrecks. The Corsair Osiris, supported with 2 Cruisers, opened fire on the Outcast dreadnought, whose bomber wing immediatly started to bomb the Corsair capital fleet.
Most fighters were destroyed, and bombers were forced to dogfight each others, when suddenly...
a Solar Flare errupted. Freeport 9 barely had the time to activate its shields... but we can't say the same about the two groups....
Nothing remained but flying scrap. There wasn't even a single escape pod... too absorbed by their fighting, no one noticed the solar flare warning... so many food wasted, so many lives ended... just like that.
