Well allright, but seeing microsoft is so damn filthy rich and what do they want to do with the source code anyway?

I know many responsible game developers who finally released the code after even just a few years.

The only game i know of, let me rephrase.....that i play, that hasnt done so yet, is Blizzard's Diablo 2....and 1.13 is coming out in 1 week....supposedly....Blizzard dont fail me now

Yes the copyright expires, but that doesn't mean Microsoft has to release the source. Unfortunately they prob never will. But we can dream as with my earlier comments, I would love to contribute to the graphics side of things, even though most of the community wouldn't agree that that is the first priority is the server side code (which I only have limited experience with)

But fingers crossed that Microsoft will actually do it:D

GUI improvements would be at the top of my wishlist...

A properly zoom-able map.
A clutter-free map.
Mouse-wheel/arrow key support for scrolly-bits.
Improved waypoint-setting system.
A way to store & retrieve strings of waypoints, preferably named strings..
A sub-system chat as the default channel.
Properly scalable GUI.
Player search function.
Friend list function.
A "ping all faction members in system" function.
A "ping all faction members on server" function.
... And that's just off the top of my head.

In a somewhat similar vein, an update-able newscast would be pretty epic win. For example, a while ago some crazed Rhinelander decided to declare NY Rhineland territory, and he was actually in NY (with a lone battleship, I think - I didn't see the guy, just overheard). But will it make the news? Not as it is. Though it really, really should.

And of course, a proper supply/demand economy sim. That's arguably the single most important thing anyone can do with the source. If it ever materialises. Also: no way I'm up for doing that - just saying.

New flight systems, new camera angles, being able for a fighter to dock with a battleship and then undock 3 systems away... tons of stuff would be able to do if they released it.

' Wrote:Also, how about better voiceacting? Can it be put in without the source code?

I mean... I hate it when the station says 'this is B-L-A-N-K, you are cleared to dock'.
However, I seldom play with voice on these days anyway...

This is already being done. I am part of a team working with Kuraine to replace a great many voicefiles for .86/.87 ... thought the project has seemingly gone on hold as i have not seen the skype chat pop in months.

The difference is that Blizzard cares about its gamers, or at least it cares more than M$. All M$ cares about is their bottom line and profit margin. We are statistics to them. I doubt we'll be seeing the source code, probably never. I know I got all enthusiastic about "getting them to give it up" but I burnt out, and don't have the money will or time to pursue that kind of thing. Has M$ actually ever release the source code to ANY of it's games? (I dont know thats why im asking.)

M$ is a monster.

*sigh* Vendettas never seem to get you anywhere.

Total control customisation is a must. I nearly got myself dead today by nonsense keyboard controls, and all the ones that matter can't be reassigned *fumes*

Mouse and Keyboard All the way.

There is nothing better than simplicity

The source code would allow much more freedom to edit and fix the game to our needs
