nice - but i think the statement stands ... no cloaks in any form or shape. - not for a broad variety of ships and also certainly not for an exclusive part of the ships of sirius.
we got enough problems to balance things as they are.
or just tell me - ... you give it to dedicated smuggling vessels. - and how do you wish to stop them? - you cannot lock a CD on anymore. furthermore a "real" cloak would have to count as "retreat" - and a decloak as "re-engage" one of the rules that is violated about the most and even misunderstood by hardened veterans and interpreted based on whats situational beneficial for the player.
Radar jammer would be so easily abused to do... Just about anything... The only people I can see being granted access to it would be those such as Mon'Star, Phantom/Wilde/Nomad bombers/fighters, something like the Arrow, and maybe the RP ships of the House leaders. Tbh, do not want a jammer at all. While I wouldn't mind one at times, I realise how badly it would affect gameplay.
That Missile cam has some uses though.
Why not make a 'Probe' Missile. No damage but a very long range that you can fire out into space or along a trade lane to see if there is anyone about.
Imagine pirating a lane when a Navy Probe drifts past you.
"The Navy are Coming! Get out of here lads!"
Also means other pilots can actully scout places out for you or act as spys for a player, but there would need to be some kind of player Accept/Deny option for that.

Sir, that is a genius thought! Probe missiles... could give exploration and scouting and whatnot a solid base to start with.
The question is; could that be possible? Judging from the video, you can look at everything with that modification, so it seems to be a global change, so everybody could "scout" anything with it. There should be testing done, and the modders would need to look at how this was done, mainly because to see if it can be trimmed down to a "scout missile only" or not. I have no experience with the camera options other than ship cam position in the game, and never could be bothered to look closer, so I dunno how that is done.
As with stealthed ships: There are ways to balance them, and there are ways to restrict them to justify balance. There would also be tremendous ways to counter them, and cloaked ships would be certainly vulnerable, possibilities are huge. Other than balancing, I do not understand why cloaking devices are not implemented in the mod, because isn't it considered an expansion to the original Freelancer with all its content. There were cloaking devices so... the only reason I can think of not having them ingame, is for balancing.
So, if I think out loud; "if we can come up with convincing and decently balanced concepts for cloaking devices, would they be finally added to the Mod?"
But back to the radar jammer; the ship itself can be shot, damaged and spotted with the bare eye, the only term would be to balance and / or restrict it that much, so that it makes sense. I can think about certain small shipclasses only, with minor combat capabilities, to justify the amount of energy and signature emitting that a "jamming device". So, if fleshed out, I could imagine it to be well balanced, and a noteworthy addition?
To hunt the prey is life,
to lose the prey is death,
to hunt the loss is insane...
furthermore a "real" cloak would have to count as "retreat" - and a decloak as "re-engage" one of the rules that is violated about the most and even misunderstood by hardened veterans and interpreted based on whats situational beneficial for the player.
That is a very definite and narrow statement, leaving the simple question of why? You've closed doors before the discussion has even begun. That is not the only way it could be handled.
How about if the jammer drained your energy so it would only last so long and when you dis-engage it you would not be able to fire weapons for several seconds due to reduced energy. for example the minute you engage it your energy bar drops right down and doesnt recharge until the jammer is switched off
Jamming is really nice, but could be easily abused. Someone could walk up your back, where you are not looking to shoot you and get a kill.
Unless it is a capital ship like a Spyglass (can be seen at 20k XD), you are flying as if you were really cloaked. Space is wide heh.
But a cool alternative could be a low signature membrane. You'd only be detected at 5-7.5k instead of 15(?). The low signature membrane could act as an armor upgrade, taking cargo space and giving a small armor multiplier (1.75, half of a mk8) [needs balancing]. I do not know if this is doable, but we've seen everything lately.
It would only be useful on fighters and bombers (should be mountable only by them).
Big ships couldn't use them since they would still logically appear on scanners because of their huge size.
