I think Doom did some experiments with mines, trying to get them to work on rocks. He expanded the blast radius on the mine just fine, but couldn't get it to crack the rocks. It seems that guns are the only piece of equipment that can pop the little rocks.
So rather than a mine I would suggest an extremely low intensity gun with a very large blast radius that uses a crap load of energy (more than a fighter can handle for sure.) A gun that can pop all of the rocks surrounding a ship at a range of 300-500 m would do the trick.
Give it a huge range and chaingun firing rate just make it do pathetic damage.
Give large splash radius etc... Then viola, make different kinds of miners too and mining guns. Variety,
and more 4500 traders. And all sorts of missions. I don't mind waiting 3-5 months for a new mod release
we need this, the pmg tried but it could never work as we had to charge more than the stations to make money, and most traders didn't want the effort of going to a field and getting our minerals.
i like the idea of valuable resources not being sold, make it only in transports so knocking them off is profitable and actual mining is too.

There are one or two little African countries who may argue that point. Pure economics never quite actually
come close to the truth. Really the only prosperity comes with the advancement of science, which of course
equates to better and more efficient armaments to be sold to the highest bidders later ...
War kills lots of people, wastes money by the bucket load, and pulls economies down ... But I digress.
I still like the idea of exploiting resources here though, in an effort to move any economy along, not just those
who are on hostile standing with others. Everyone should get the chance ...

I like the better opportunities for Bounty Hunters idea...
Personally, the only reason why I still accept normal NPC missions is the fact that you can sell the pilots whom's ships was destroyed by you - Bounty Hunter style...
But can the prices on certain pilots be raised a bit to make it worth while, like say the pilot of a gunboat or a BS ?? I think this would make it even more worth while taking on these ships and not pawning of the pilot for a small amount of credits that's not even worth it... but that's just me... always hunting...
