On the topic of not being able to hear a smiley... Smilies in my mind, are mostly voice tones. Like, "Hi, Bob! =D"... Excited and happy.

But on the contrary, when you get radio'd by a police-cop... Or anybody else... A little video feed pops up. Sooo... Technically I guess there is a video feed too? Theoretically?

I always put a star/asterisk enclosing any onomatopoeia's... example:

*laugh*
*chuckle*
*growl*

This all seems reasonable to me, as you could easily make these sounds over a radio comm.
I've had no trouble so far. Although, maybe I've never run into the guy that complained about "hehe."

There is no "emote" command. You just have to use a little creativity. I know it's just my opinion, but smileys look stupid. They are only one step away from LAWLZ, ROFFLES, and OMG ICMP.

By you typing the exclamation point, it denotes how excited you already are. How could Bob not see that? I think most would assume that you were happy to see him too, unless you are enemies and the friendly gesture was ironic-- which would also be obvious to members involved. The mood of a statement can usually be expessed with the proper diction. If adding another few words to, "Hi, Bob!" so it says "Hi, Bob! It's great to see you!" is all it takes, then why take such a lazy shortcut?

... This is why I never liked forums really... Everybody has their opinion and keep posting repeatedly to get it across... Sigh... Nevermind then, I wont be a hippocrite... But if somebody can answer my post about the RP being way to serious, please do... I'm rather confused as to whether or not our characters can have lives instead of just be robots.

Wow, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was trying to cram my opinion down your throat. I assumed you were asking me to expound on my *emote* way of typing. My sincere apologies if I've contributed to furthering your distaste for the forums.

I thought I already answered your post on RP being taken too seriously, but I won't repost my reply again. I wouldn't want to sound like I was "reposting my opinion repeatedly until it got across." Maybe my answer wasn't the one you were looking for? Sorry to be such a waste of your time. :(

Well, there are opportunities for light-hearted roleplay.

Hiring sympathetic mercenaries for payments of cookies.

Calling the Bushido 'cross dressers'.

Saying that the drugs in your transport are 'for my own personal use, officer!'

Things like this are great fun!

I was thinking about smiles. First we do know that transmissions can include video as well, that's what you get by default if you don't turn off animated portraits in options. So perhaps smiles can be seen as a facial expression of a person saying to you something and transmitting both video and audio channels. Now it needs a little bit more thought but I think people shouldn't get sanctioned for regular smiles. Anything excessive is mostly bad, smiles as well, but when they go well with said message it's not an issue.

Reading forums further made me very sad panda. This witch hunt... I know why it started and I agree there had to be done something, but it seems to me there is something wrong going on. Hmm... As much as I support RP I don't like the looks of it, I really do... It worries me. I hope in the end everything will be alright, and I do hope the drastic measures we've seen earlier are but a temporary reaction to the turbulent times at Disco server.

Well, regular smileys I don't think should sanction anyone too...I've already seen and never complained...and anyway, the OMG, ROFL, N00B, etc. must be our priorities:P

That's right. Major RP offenders should be reported and dealt with accordingly, it's just that normal behavior is sometimes get caught by wild fire, and this is what worries me.

That's why I'm avoiding tau-31...it has become a "forbidden" system for me or something:P

Why not? The people in any social setting that deserve the greatest scrutiny are the people who are enforcing the rules. If they enforce good rules consistently then things run smoothly. If they lapse in judgement things go to Hell. And the only feedback they get on what kind of job they're doing for us is our cheers and jeers. Based on the number of replies to sanctions saying "Yay! Burn Tau-31 to the ground!" it seems they're doing a good job overall:)

Regarding Locke pushing a means of emoting instead of emoticons; if we had a nice big chat buffer like most other multiplayer games I'd say "sure! emote away!", but I find that I'm often having to delete a bunch of what I'm saying just to make things fit. Given our physical limitations I'd rather type ":D" than "*laughing*".

Wow, this is now a reply to really old stuff. You people need to post less. (Am I kidding? You'd know if I followed that comment with an emoticon!)

I think there was more to the incident than just "hehe"... that was just the culmination of a bunch of OORP activity by that person.

But it's all starting to sound like my swearing thread.... people are getting concerned that behaviour that would be considered reasonable and acceptable, is gonna be punished swiftly and without recourse. No matter if you have $3m or $300m, it'll all be taken away.

And no the admins aren't infallible... they are human (last time I checked). The current clampdown seems harsh to, but unfortunately with the recent rash of idiots, harsh measures are called for. So yes things are touchy at the mo.

As for smileys in chat, IMSOHO they have a place. IF used sparingly and correctly. As people have pointed out they can add a visual cue/inflection as to the speakers expression & tone, coz we're stuck using text in what is a verbal medium. (As for video, how do you see someone's expression thru a helmet....?)
