OK, so from a Modder ill try to anwser some of your questions.

1. the Civilian turrets, the ones the trains and Transport use, those are classified as i think lvl9, or lvl10 turrets/guns, therefor if you can mount those lvl of turrets/guns you can mount them, though its pointless as they do next to nothing damage, and incredible to big for fighters.

2. The situation with the docking of big ships is due to the games Lands you in a landing pattern, notice when you dock with a fighter it docks slower, yet is pretty agile in its turns?, the Game does the same thing with capital ships, problem is that they Turn like bricks and, fly very slow, If you where to leave it to dock, it eventually will, just take 15 mins or so.

Thats a ADMIN controlled thing, and it would take to long to go through all your characters and edit every factions REP to you.

This can be done by special serverside software, but I don't have access to it (was never released to public).

And this is, IMO, a big shame

It is nearly impossible to RP a trader who fights his way out of trouble. A Large Train, even when equipped with the best turrets available, is simply no match for anything bigger than a light fighter.

What chance do a trader have if confronted with a PC Pirate? None at all! He can either drop his cargo or he can be destroyed fighting is not an option.

Giving civilian ships access to some downgraded navy weapons might even the field just a bit

Of course, the alternative would be to upgrade the turrets on the Trains to lvl 10. Even though the thought of a Large Train equipped with Battleship turrets fills me with dread. But hey, if the Mining ship can have 10 of them, why cant a Train?

Thats a shame. It would have made it a lot easier to start a character as a pirate. Ahh well, I guess you cant have everything

Trains and transports have been downgraded, earlier they could mount battleship equipment which made them too strong. They should be vulnerable to PC pirates - maybe get an escort? This encourages players to team up.
The Liners and Miner are a bit stronger - like you say. If you can get someone to sell you a better shield, you'll be better protected, but with less cargo space.

Role-played characters:
daedalus - Liberty Navy
bandersnatch - Ruthless criminal possessed by a (huge) alien
Shredder - Small-time Kusari pirate, looking to join the Blood Dragons

Well, this is just my personal opinion, so take is as such

There is a big difference between: you can fight if you want, but youd be better off with an escort, and: dont even bother to fight, go get an escort

I RP a freelancer. I go wherever I want, and I do it alone. I have a few friends, but no permanent affiliations. And I will not hire an escort (now, this is partly RP, and partly the fact that few others are playing when I am).
You say that a Train should be vulnerable to a pirate. True, but it should not be a free kill. Heck, even battle ships can be taken down with a fighter how much of a threat would a Train really be, even with lvl 10 weapons?

As I said, the thought of a Train equipped with BS Missile Turrets is, honestly, idiotic. But a train should be able to defend itself somehow. As it is now, I cant even fight of the NPC pirates!

Now, if cargo space on all transport ships were to be increased I might fly another ship, trading cargo space for the extra security of more armour and better weapons. But since all other ships have less than half the cargo space of a Train, this is simply not viable. It is far better to take your chances in a Train and then accept the occasional loss of your cargo.
Add to this, the fact that the fighters have had their arsenal massively upgraded with the last couple of releases, its easy to see why no one bothers to fly the original ships anymore. Theyre simply outmanoeuvred, outshoot, outmatched, and very very dead.

And you pirates wonder why we traders run from every fight. Well, what choice do we have? We cant fight you

All I ask, is that Traders are given the means to protect themselves

I've seen people mount some cap-ship weapons, mainly Liberty Gunboat turrets, but Kusari Destroyer turrets are lvl 9 too.

The only problem is a Large Train can only fire 2 or 3 times if it has all it's turrets replaced with Gunboat or Destroyer turrets.

Maybe the energy level of Transports and Trains should be increased? Then fitting other weapons, such as the Liberty Gunboat and Destroyer turrets, would be possible.

Ummmm...since there are 26 pages of posting here on this topic (it`s larger than the last one), i think it will be not-so-easy for Igiss to count all our proposals. And another thing...did you notice that nowhere on the server at any time in any part of space you can`t see people flying hawks, bloodhounds, falcons, and other midlevel ships? :(

I have noticed, I think it is a shame that a lot of mid-level stuff gets passed by so quickly and ignored. The same goes for the mid-level gun effects.

One suggestion would be to stretch the economy, by making it harder to earn money, but even then some players will trade their way passed all the mid-level equipment in order to buy the high level ship. The economy could be stretched by reducing the value of everything apart from ships and items which are deliberately expensive like Nova and battleship equipment. Full player looting would also slow things down.

At least some of the mid-level ship models have been re-used as Mk II fighters, that is good. Maybe some of the mid-level guns could be re-used, e.g. Tarantula Mk III.

I've noticed that alot of the mid-level ships get...er.. how to put it plainly?.... Well most mid-level ships with mid-level weps get pounded into scrap if you go into the Borderworlds and the Nomads systems.

A hawk will only survive about 7 or 8 shots from an Outcast Stilletto before your blasted apart. the mid-level ships are only good against small pirate groups.

eg the GC, Rogues, Xenos etc.

Against bigger/better equipped groups such as the Blood Dragons, Hackers, Brunschuh, Unioners etc, your gonna get a big of repair bill after any fight.

And going up against the Outcasts or Corsairs is plain sucide. Plus being a Pirate in a mid-level fighter is just gonna give trader's easy kills, even with armour upgrades your gonna take a hammering while doing little, if any, damage to the trader's shield.

You need class 8 or higher weps to have any chance of dropping a trader's shield before it can run off. Personally class 9 or higher would be best and then set-up your weps so you can fire, without stopping to let your energy recharge, for 2 or 3 minutes. This way you can pound the shield/hull of a trader while it's running/charging cruise engines.

While powerful VHF's with class 9 and 10 weps are sold in FL you'll always get someone buying them, the mid-level ships are going to ignored until there's a very good reason to get one of them instead of a VHF.

This post is really getting big...
I'll bring up one idea that I have suggested (not only me I beleive) - the idea of the better equipped NPC patrols. I mean the Idea of the NPC's of the houses using their MKII light and heavy fighters and best guns and lv 9 and 10 shields... stuff like that. This will definetely will make things better.
And maybe we should make the Sidewinder a missle not a torpedo , cause its acting more like a missle of the rank of firestalker and such.. not as a torpedo.

And maybe we should find a better use for the sunslayer torpedo , or the starkiller...change their stats, make 'em more useful. And maybe nova torp should have a normal range of explosion , but lower price...Think about it.

"Comm. Adama:
-Starbuck whadda 'ya hear?
Starbuck:
-Nothing but the rain sir!
Comm. Adama:
-Then grab your gun and bring in the cat!
Starbuck:
-Boom , boom , boom!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------
My characters:
- =BSG=Starbuck ; Maj. Kara Thrace(fighter pilot)
- =BSG=Galactica ; Commander Lee Adama(Battlestar)
- =BSG=Helo ; Lt. Karl Agathon (bomber)
- Colonial 795 (trader)

- [Phantom]The_Damned (oopps a baddie)
