and about that Eagle winnin... that wont work anymore because of the 'run away and come back' rule.

There is no loadout for killing Gunboats solo in a fighter, because fighters simply weren't meant to. But people with enough skill are capable of doing so, against cocky or bad gunboat pilots.
Inferno makes it a whole lot easier, because the hardest part is stripping a Gunboat's tank of a shield. If you're not an Outcast then it's a lot harder.
You could always use a pseudo-bomber loadout with 6 debs and a MR...
Inferno, full krakens + nuke worked well enough on my outcast.
It would even work against cruisers with pathiance.
However 1 miss of the inferno need you to hit 2 extra shots to have the same result.
So every shot counts.
Having screamers too against gunboats would work better.
But IMO if you're seeking to specifically kill Gunboats, get a bomber.

Although, the topic was about fighters killing gunboats, and it's easier to dodge a gunboat's turrets with a fighter, especially if the gunboat pilot is good, although, that would mean the gunboat also has the advantage of high skill, you'd have to be a pretty damn good skilled fighter to kill a gunboat like that..
un-related note: imo, Gunboats die too easily in group fights.
What brought this on was when my Bastet (6 excals, MR and a nuke) came across a pulse razor Orca in Omicron Minor. Now I could dodge his shots easy enough, but I couldn't deal damage back without relying on the npc snubs for support.
If I were to pick a ship for hunting gunboats, I would pick a bomber, but I want to be able to fight fighters effectively as well.
I could get support, but sometimes my characters find themselves in a position where they need to dish out the hurt by themselves.
So, what is a good balance between hull busting and shield busting when you need to be able to deal with gunboats?
Simple. Full pulse on the guns or on the torp slot. Preferably with either an inferno or Tizzies for energy efficiency since you'll need to deal a large continuous stream of shield damage. Standard civvy pulse guns are probably not going to cut it.
3 loadouts:
- Tizonas/MR/Nuke
- Inferno/Hullbusters/Nuke - Use energy efficient code guns.
- Debilitators/MR/Screamer
All of these will require patience to pull a kill off - and you'll only be able to do it against a lesser skilled gunboat pilot ('cause if you shieldrun, the gunboat will also be shielded again)
