after I've been here for a while I've noticed that the way roleplay
is handled on this server would need some changes to the serverrules
to make it more fun and also more clear to all players, old and in
particular the new ones.
In the near past there have been many problems with missunderstanding
of the roleplay just because many players (mostly new ones) have no real
idea what to act like, and this caused a lot of problems like all of you
know.
Therefor I would like to suggest the following.
1. A player can join at maximum 2 clans (1 faction) with his chars
I suppose this would be very good for the roleplay on the server because
the player can/must identify with his char and will act more like the
chars reputation/orientation demands it.
When a player is in too many different clans these chars demand a different
behaviour in roleplay, but in practice this doesn't work cause he can't
get deep enough in the chars role to really live/play it.
[color=#FFCC00]2. All chars that want to participate in roleplay, when not yet in a clan/faction
do need a tag to identify their position, cause scanning for the ID often is not
posible and/or ID and Tag just don't match and/or just don't show the chars real
orientation.
Therfor I'd suggest the following tags for players without clan/faction allignment.
also allowed should be faction tags like (for example):
[IMG] = independent miners guild
[DSE] = deep space engeneering
[IC} = interpsace commerce
[COR] = corsairs
[OUT] = outcasts
and so on.
The orientation tag should be at last postion in the chars name like:
antonio.banderas_[X] / if he's a pirate
The npc faction tag should be in front of the name like:
[OUT]_antonio.banderas_[X] / if he's an outcast alligned pirate
When a char joins a faction/clan this ain't neccessary anymore, cause then
the clans/faction discription will tell their position in roleplay.
I've been admin on some servers for quite a while, and there this system
worked very well, cause you can see at first sight what role the player
is in and you know how to treat him without scanning for the ID, cause
like I said, the chars actual factions-allignement often doesn't show his
real position in the roleplay, cause the alligments can and do chance pretty
often depending on the players actions.
3. All non tagged players should be treated as if they were not there, because this
would show that this char isn't in RP yet.
After about 4 weeks (maximum) every char should be tagged with a tag that shows the chars
orientation since this is a roleplay server.
Players that don't want to participate in RP should start a new life on one of the other servers
that don't care too much about RP, there are quite enough available.
Pretty easy and it works.
Think about it and give Discovery a chance to find back to a superb roleplay
experience.
Before anyone answers, READ IT TWICE & THINK TWICE, there are already too many senseless
and unthought answers to most threads;)

PS: I know this will need a playerwipe or lots of work for the admins
renaming chars, but isn't that worth it ?!
Why complicate things with naming [OUT] for Outcasts (just an example) when if you keep just a little to the RP, it becomes VERY hard to loose the ingame tag of Outcasts (example also)?
I like being able to appear in people's HUD as 'Outcasts - Bernard.Fokke[GoR]', which is much more 'fitting' to the game than '[OUT]Bernard.Fokke[GoR]'.
If the people would really RP and not think, I quote: 'NPC reputation means squat', there won't be any problem. Same for the [P], [X], [T] and so on. If you're Outcasts tagged for example, I think it's obvious you're not looking for someone to give him (her) candy.
I won't blame anyone for shooting me if I'm red in his/her HUD. I even went so far to tag my Outcast character with the Outcast Guard - it'll be red in a lot of HUDs. Not complicated, takes a few more missions and a few calculated kills.
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
That system sounds good, but the tags would require a lot of name changing, and at 2mil a pop, it's not very accessable for newbies to the server to change their names often.

@ Max: Well thought out, but I'm afraid I must agree with Nightfall. With a little work, you can appear in others' HUDS as you need to be for your particular faction or role play. And it would be a bit redundant to see someone on your hud as "Outcast - [Out]Rocky-Raccoon_[X]". That person is obviously either very friendly or closely aligned with the Outcasts already, and yeah, he's not out distributing candy.
(Oh, yeah... and the ELF would need another "closing" tag, like [M] for "missionary". Snort.)
@Nightfall: You worked for your Guard tag??? Pops somehow got his Outcast Guard tag by bloody accident, no rhyme nor reason, on his Trader no less! Can't get rid of the stupid thing, so I've taken to considering it some weird honor bestowed on me. (Either that or a cock-up at Ship's Registry.. lol.)
@Ross: Agreed. Cost would be a prohibitive factor. If new Disco clans wished to adopt this convention, I see no problem at all; but expecting everyone to conform, or to undergo another wipe, seems a bit extreme.
Thats the whole point isn't it ... Up till recently we all knew who we were. Igiss had given us the opportunity to
roleplay as factions with, or without NPC alignment ... Though it payed to tag and ID your ships to suit your
characters, and to appear red, green or white to other people without the need for complex naming systems ...
Thats how we work here, and believe me it works ... Just takes a bit more imagination and for everyone to get
on here, read the faction status thread, and take it from there ...
We are not the same as the rest of the other servers out there, and God forbid we become like them ...
This is Discovery 24/7, its unique in its own RP way, and we older timers would appreciate you newer and welcome
players to take a little time to understand how we work here, not come in and try to change what has worked well
for a year and a half. Bear with it, and change to our way of thinking please ...

So whats so bad about the way things are done here?
We have IDs and its easy (possibly too easy) to get a tag to show your NPC alignment.
However, new players either don't get the system, or don't care and want only to fight.
I've spoken to several new players who point blank refuse to read the rules, let alone the forums, and they get downright hostile if you point out why they should.
So until/unless we can get ALL the new players to read the rules this discussion and your suggestions are pointless.
Nah, I like Discovery how it is now. Its a good idea. But I like the original way better anyway. And with all the name changing certificates, 2 mil a pop. And Korrd spending an entire day renaming characters. Not worth it.
Good points Max, but Its fine how it is, I Think the admins need to be a little less forgiving about new players who refuses to read rules and blatantly do not accept RP.
quite some answers yet, some more, some less well thought:P
I agree that the "old" still in use system is not bad, at last not to the players
that already got used to it and visit the forums regular.
The intention for my suggestion was (is) that there came up many many problems
with in particular new players, maybe it's true that a lot of them came over from the
VOID (still asking myself why they came over if just looking for PVP).
And of course that it simply works, no confusion about a players color or ID, the
name tells it all on first sight.
Another problem, at least to me is (and as I know also to some others), that the
npc allignment does change, sometimes even without any explainable reason.
Look atm me, I worked a lot on changing my Junker allignment to Lane Hacker,
I shot over 1000 npc's do make it match my new LH ID.
(I'm going to be a HF member - if some admin will find the time to do my namechange.)
After a while I was very surprised to notice that I'm still full green with LH but
now was tagged LWB (?), how did it come ?! No clue, I never shot a LH, and till
that point I believed that was the only way to break the alligment.
Whatever, if the old system will be left alone as it is, there are further problems to
be expected, cause you will always have many (new) players that just don't care
about the forums/rules.
Another, very hard way to get this community back to a good RP might be to lock the
server and make it password accessable only.
It won't secure that only RP interested players join, but it certainly would keep off many
of those hardcore PVPers that are just looking for trouble.
How ever, I like this server, I like this community and I will keep on trying to get also new
players into RP, and make em understand how things work, I just hope you other "Oldies" do
the same thing and show comprehension when a new player runs into you.
Always make up your mind and think of the time when you started here and probably felt a bit lost,
some words of explanation just take a few minutes and respect if someones says "leave me alone".
