It also annoys me that the faction I'm starting up will have no choice but to use the Freelancer IFF with our pirate IDs, at least for the short term.
I get pirated by Corsair NPCs (or rather, they try) all the time and I'm neutral to them. What's the difference?
The whole idea of a Freelancer is that they'll go where the money or their own interests lie at any given time, be that for better or worse. Pirating makes sense under the Freelancer IFF, as long as the ID is correct. A pirate ID just makes you an unlawful Freelancer. You can go and work for or with any unlawfuls, anywhere, as long as they're not hostile to you.
Most people know that Freelancers aren't necessarily good guys and react accordingly. I have a lawful Freelancer too who is often looked upon cautiously by other lawfuls, which I actually enjoy. It wouldn't really make sense in RP to have a Pirate IFF, any pirate in their right mind would go out of their way to prevent advertising it, no matter how much hacking and bribing it took.

Pirating next to a station is not very smart since traders tend to dock there in case of emergencies.
And there is a rep-ninja attached to the pirate-ID which turns you deep-red to all lawfuls.
Although the pirate appears to you in the colors of your affiliation to Freelancer-IFFd ships, they are not able to sit right next to West Point.
If they are not attacked by the NPCs they have used bribes for Navy, LPI and LSF after getting their ID.
This would be much like a Liberty-Navy ship using bribes to be able to sit right next to New Berlin.

Yeah. Reasons for thinking of this weren't exactly RP reasons though, mostly the baffled responses I get for pirating with Freelancer IFF (usually quite polite mind you, with the occasional OMG IMMA SANKSHUN U). Out of RP, it makes perfect sense (in my eyes), but in-RP, yeah, makes little sense + ENGAIJIN PIRATE!

The difference is that Corsairs are pirates. Freelancers are freelancers, pilots for hire. Like mercenaries, except that "mercenary" has an unlawful connotation, as opposed to the lawful connotation of "freelancer".
Depends, if you have a Freelancer IFF and ID I'd say you respect the laws. If you have a Freelancer IFF and a Pirate ID you are a Freelancer who doesnt respect the law. That means you are a Pirate. You dont fly around kill anything. You just pirate people.

Respect whose law? If you're a Maltese Freelancer and you pirate somebody carrying Artifacts within Outcast space (ignoring the WTFness of who would actually carry Artifacts within Outcast space), you are upholding your house's law. Freelancers can lawfully pirate too, as long as it's something their House's law permits them to pirate.
' Wrote:Had an idea the other day; since I get a lot of complaints on my pirate character IFF-wise (Which isn't against the rules, FYI), would it be possible to implement a generic pirate IFF, for pirates who aren't affiliated with a specific faction?
Civilian ships & loadout only & IFF saying "pirate", to be used in conjunction with pirate ID, perhaps?
...Or something like that
Anyways, just an idea I had, bash away
Traders cry about being pirated regardless of your ID/IFF ... and regardless of how well you role play. They just plain don't like to be pirated ... period.
I'd love to see a Pirate IFF come about ... but even with that ... you'd still have people crying when they get pirated. You could ask them for 1 credit and some of them would just hit cruise and keep silent. Then if you caught them (for that single credit) they'd post something about how unfair pirates are.
