Good ideas, they've been suggested before but never made it very far.

The shield killing also goes along with an idea that was presented months ago - a "shield ship". Basically, it was suggested that a relatively small ship, something like a freighter or small transport, would have a shield bubble that extends several hundred or thousand meters outwards from the ship. This 'shield ship' would be able to drop it's shields, other small ships like fighters could then go inside the shield bubble, and when the shield ship re-activates it's shields, those other ships are protected by the shield as well, but are not able to stray far from the shield ship without bouncing into it.

I say there should be a command that shuts power off completely; Shields, weapons, engines, even lights. Then it should take a few seconds to turn back on, accompanied by a message telling others nearby that they are powering up.

PvP abuse, IMO.

I like both ideas...

EX shields: some good RP'ler "dock" at me (prisonliner maddox) when they transfer new prisoners... good for rp when i can lower the shield before they are "docking" (fly very very close to me)

EX engine: some ships, like my prisonliner or some capitals defending gates or anything like that do not move a long time... so they can turn off the engine to save energie (maybe make a better generator regen. when it is off but i takes ~20 seconds to restart the engines)

F1! Just the message comes before it, not after. it takes a minute to re-power.

I never did mind the engines. They are powered when standing still, but you can go immediately. Stand-by mode, that's it. Powering down -engines- in combat situation you say? I'd rather switch off anything else than that. Including the escape-pod.

that "can" be exploited...

for example - currently a capital ship can only fire at a transport in pure self defense - self defense is defined by having ones shields drain by 50% or more and being fired upon.

usually an image of someone firing at the player - including a look at the shieldbar is sufficient proof that the player was in a state of "self defense"

if one could turn the shields up - and even if they d need to regen by itself ..... it would / could pose a loophole against that clause in the rules.

- turn off your shields and claim it was self defense - and yes... even a medium transport CAN drain a warships shields eventually.

Hmm. I haven't considered that. I somewhat though that we do not have people who are bloody bastards enough to try something like that.

hopefully not - but then, we have people whos pride and joy is to ruin the gameplay of others one way or another - so i wouldn t put it beyond the possible - even here. ( and that doesn t include only the newbie that doesnt know any better - but also the hardened veteran player who just turned situationally bitter )

the principle is sound - but even if its only a handful of people who d spitefully exploit it to have a reason to circumvent a rule .... it might be too much ( but then again ... maybe not ... after all ... only cause 2 or 3 ppl out of 500 exploit it doesn t make it a bad thing as a whole )

There's a very simple way to solve that... Display a message that the shields were turned off / on ... It will be hard to play a victim of the transport's attack if it's evident you just turned your shields off. After that it's the transport's choice if he wants to keep shooting at the capital ship.

Perhaps when power is shut off, your ship doesnt show up on scanners past maybe 1000-2000m? Psuedo-cloak?

Me likes very much. It would also have a risk factor, as if you're caught you would be toast.
