to Montezuma, good idea. but we cant have HIGH refire and HIGH speed or they automatically become regular old guns that go boom.

Use an elongated projectile, in order to simulate a beam effect with the refire rate. We know that 10.00 refire wont lag the server too badly, as we had 16.67 refire chainguns in 4.84 and even a ship loaded with those wouldnt cause much stress.

This is meant as a counterpart for the Light Mortar / Light Trebuchet, it has the same damage per second and energy consumption rate, but takes sustained fire to deal the same amount of damage, instead of being a burst damage weapon.

Mass Driver (Class 9 Turret - Cruiser Capship Weapon)

Hull Damage: 666
Shield Damage: 333
Range: 1400m
Speed: 1400m/s
Refire: 8.33
Energy: 1200

Give it a solid projectile (something similar to solaris), and have it sound like a physical weapon instead of an energy weapon (it's meant to be shooting actual bullets at the target). Designed as an anti-bomber weapon for use on battlecruisers only - it uses too much energy to be effective on cruisers (10,000 energy per second), but right now solaris turrets do not work well at all on battlecruisers due to restricted range.

Ok, make them high refire, but regular missile speed (cannonball, firestalker etc.)

A bomber going on a strafing run against a BS and firing 10 of those and doing more dammage than duel novas would be amasing, but with the non-homing, and low speed, they simply couldnt be anything other than an anti-cruiser/BS weapon.

they would most likely need to use quite a bit of energy so they aint used on fighters etc, im talking maybe even double the energy of a Arch Angel.

So then sure you can use em on a fighter but not well.

EDIT: also would these be made generic/universal weapons? Or specified to certain factions? maybe even as far as one per bomber holding faction?

Exactly, they should be a bomber only weapon (maybe make it use a torp hardpoint).

One thing that would be very nice to see with them would be the missiles having tails similar to the screamer missiles (they are what im getting the inspiration from!)


Edit: Yeah, i think they should only be availible to factions that have dedicated bomber wings, and that encounter capital fleets regularly (houses, corsairs, OC, BD, hessians etc.)

very easy - once you re a weapons effect expert...

the heavy mortar effect is bad ( hopefully no hard feelings, i know you made it ) - but it looks like a fluffy light blue marshmellow that pops up in a rediculously large explosion ( the actual explosion isn t too bad - but the colours are totally off for the rather conservatively coloured freelancer [ you know - brown eagles, grey ships, etc. ] )

so - here is a description of what i d really love to see... :

a heavy weapon like the mortar for battleships only that does not fire when you hit the fire button... but

- plays a charge sound first while it delays for maybe 1 second ( that way you avoid it being used against small targets )
- after that 1 second delay, it releases a maximum velocity projectile that carries an expanding "tail" that expands as fast as the projectile flies ( hence creating a "beam" ) of quite a size ( like the battleship razor - the tails, not the balls, which also look rediculous )
- on impact it should show a fiery explosion - like melting / glowing metal.

how can that be done?

maybe with a missile projectile. - since such a weapon should not be used against a shield - its OK when its a "missile" type.

a missile can get a delay before it "launches" - so when you fire it, you get the 1 second immobile projectile that speeds away "instantly" after its "charged" up.

it would create a weapon that can be used against very large capital ships of at leasat cruiser size. - it cannot be aimed at a small target, cause you cannot fire it with the delay applied to it - but it should be instant once its launched. ( or to be safe - make it 2 seconds chargeup )


i just love the capital "beams" in freespace 2 - and such a concept would simulate those beams. - now i m not sure what kind of projectile a "missile" weapon can have. if they can only show a smoke-trail, it won t work of course

And no hard feelings taken im not happy with the heavy mortar myself. i didn't get enough colour into it. its very plain.

As for the effect you request it is easier than it sounds, i already done it with the Delusion, fire it then it gets brighter and larger after time.

as for beams, they will get along slowly but surely.

How about a Generic civy mass driver

Same DPS as a Sammael, or any good lasar BUT, REDUCED SHEILD DMG. sheilds are good at stoping matter.

500 rng
800 m/sec speed
Basically a low ranged high speed weapon of high hull, but low shield damage.
Maybe make it for Synth:ylove:, sell it on the Staionary Barge i wanna buy.

the High Refire is a problem there, since the more people using it, the more it would become a burden on the server also i reckon a weapon like that would become as popular as the chain guns (not very)
