The Charlemagne battleships were designed around 676 AGS (760 AS), specifically for defensive and support purposes. Battleships of this class were configured to hold and maintain large numbers of fighters and cover them with powerful point defense turrets. By the time of the Gallic invasion of Bretonia, the dated Charlemagnes were used as the rearguard for advancing forces and for protecting vulnerable supply lines.

Originally a warship of the Gallic Royal Navy, the Battleship Oblique was tasked with garrisoning occupied Tau-44 against Crayter and Council attacks. The Oblique and her fleet shockingly deserted to The Council in 732 AGS (822 AS), after receiving brutal orders to execute the remaining Crayter civilians and prisoners of war being held on Borneo. The fleet played a key role in liberating the system, before moving on to participate in the Council's campaigns across Burgundy. In 741 AGS (825 AS), the Oblique was dispatched south to establish a new front and capture Provence -- opening another direction of attack on Ile-de-France.

The battleship and her forces hid in the Mer Mediterrainee, skirmishing with the system garrison commanded by the Battleship Arles. Late in the year, the Oblique was reinforced by Council survivors from Roussillon. During the so-called "Clash of the Titans", both the Arles and the Oblique were destroyed outright. The Council's depleted forces retreated to Champagne, and the crippled Royal garrison fell back to Ile-de-France -- creating the power vacuum later exploited by The Minarchy. The wreckage of the Oblique, however, remained -- its unspent ordinance and molten hull plating raining down upon Planet Marseille. EFL is now working to salvage the Oblique's wreckage, however progress has been glacially slow.
