The Battleship Undine was deployed in 798 AS during Rheinland's explosive military buildup prior to the Colony Wars. Assigned to the Western Fleet, she was dispatched to the Hamburg border, before pushing into the Bering Independent Worlds on the outbreak of war in 800 AS. The Undine suffered heavy damage to its engines when a temporary refueling depot it was moored to was destroyed by renegade Liberty cruisers. In the chaos of Rheinland's government collapsing soon after, survivors describe the Undine's officers going "berserk" and massacring fellow crewmen, before being overwhelmed. The remaining crew abandoned the immobilized ship using onboard shuttles and fled back to Rheinland.
Drifting inside the Tanner Asteroid Belt, the Undine's location was quickly lost -- it would be many years before Rheinland's authorities were stable enough to dispatch search parties in vain. Instead, the asteroid-battered hulk was rediscovered by Unioner scavengers, who were prowling Colony War battlefields for military grade salvage. After slowly towing the battleship back to Pacifica Base, work began on tearing out internal components and valuable subsystems for use in the development of the early Hel class cruisers. When the Red Hessians launched their first battleship in 819 AS, the Unioners rushed to compete, fearing the Hessian's rising influence and prestige within Rheinland's underworld.
The stripped hull of the Undine was selected for repair, with the Unioners bartering components from the Junkers of Yanagi and the Corsairs, and scavenging from Thuringia, Bering, and Hudson. The Undine's first major deployment came in 826 AS against the vulnerable Vierlande Prison. The Unioners led a flotilla of Coalition and Red Hessian forces in capturing the station and freeing its inmates. Little did the Unioners know that their "allies" were aware of the Unioners' cooperation with the Corsairs, using the joint assault to spring an ambush that tore the Undine apart. After the shellshocked Unioners re-occupied the Prison, they assessed that the Undine was completely unsalvagable, and could not make a jump back to Bering. As a result, it was once again stripped of components for recycling into other projects.
