BALANCE
- Added: Ship upgrades!
- Added: Armor upgrades can be applied to all classes, altering your ship's hit points and mass.
- Added: Heavy Fighters can equip shield upgrades and customize their powerplants, allowing players to tune their ships more to their liking.
- Added: Light Fighters can customize their powerplants.
- Note: Upgrades are not distributed evenly across the entire game; there is an unlawful/civilian/military split, with some exceptions, such as Junker bases. One upgrade is not supposed to be better than the other, they are designed to give you more customization and playstyle options.
- Note: While upgrades are not available everywhere for purchase, they are not restricted by tech compatibility in any way. If you have an upgrade on a ship that has a slot for it, you can equip it (assuming the laws of the land allow you to). Make shady deals with players to get your hands on the powerplant or shield upgrade that you want.
- Changed: Mass reduced by 17.5%.
- Changed: Strafe force reduced by 10%.
- Changed: Fighter missiles limited to Very Heavy Fighters.
- Changed: Fighter missiles rebalanced: now punchier, more ammo-limited and with longer delay between firing.
- Changed: Fighter gun power usage formula adjusted, penalizing middle-of-the-road guns like BHG Warriors less.
- Changed: High shield damage "hybrid" fighter guns like class 1s deal less -- usually no -- energy damage, and instead use weapon types to do their increased shield damage. You will no longer have your energy surpressed by Justice Mk. III's.
- Changed: Light Fighter class balance:
- Changed: Reduced maximum turn rate proportionally. Every ship is as far away from the other as they were pre-5.3 in terms of turn rate, but in a smaller range.
- Changed: Increased response speed to make them feel less miserable and to compensate for the turn rate reduction.
- Added: Customizable powerplants.
- Removed: Access to missiles.
- Changed: Heavy Fighter class balance:
- Changed: Class received a broad balance pass. On top of that, accounting for powerplants now being modular we have retuned their stats to account for things such as ships who used to have heavy powerplants now have with a standard one by default, which is weaker.
- Added: Customizable powerplants.
- Added: Shield upgrades.
- Removed: Access to missiles.
- Changed: Very Heavy Fighter class balance:
- Added: Two dedicated missile slots. They are additive, so you will be able to run your typical loadout and have missiles at the same time.
- Changed: Bomber class balance:
- Changed: Bombs no longer ammo-based, instead burst-fire and +15 mass.
- Changed: Gunboat class balance:
- Changed: Now thrust at 200 m/s, with an average/sustained speed of 175 m/s.
- Changed: Increased Gunboat Primary turret damage by 25%, reduced armor pen from 75 to 50.
- Changed: Cruiser class balance:
- Changed: Now able to engine kill.
- Changed: Mass reduced by 10%.
- Changed: Mass Maximum turn speed increased by 10%.
- Changed: Balance pass over heavies and defense turrets.
- Changed: Average thrust speed increased by 5 m/s, from 155 to 160 m/s.
- Changed: Battlecruiser class balance:
- Changed: Now have very high (600) armor on their 'main body'.
- Changed: Components generally have 200 armor, with some easy-to-hit components having 250 or 300 armor.
- Changed: Destroyed components have 300 armor, making them a vulnerability compared to the main body of the ship.
- Changed: Main batteries now have a universal range of 2600 meters, and are generally slower muzzle velocity -- but more than make up for this in increased efficiency.
- Changed: Main batteries now all use different types of burstfire to prevent them from being permanently fired.
- Changed: Balance pass over heavies.
- Changed: Thrust speed reduced by 10 m/s, from 150 to 140 m/s.
- Changed: Cruiser flak:
Now triple-shot burstfire with higher ROF.
Power usage reduced by ~33%.
Dispersion increased from 3 to 4.5 degrees.
- Changed: Countermeasure Dropper changes:
- Changed: Countermeasure Dropper - 5 second cooldown, 50 ammo, 70% effectiveness, 1100 range
- Changed: Imp. Countermeasure Dropper - 6 second cooldown, 35 ammo, 75% effectiveness, 900 range
- Changed: Adv. Countermeasure Dropper - 7 second cooldown, 25 ammo, 80% effectiveness, 700 range
- Changed: Nomad Countermeasure - 6 second cooldown, 40 ammo, 75% effectiveness, 900 range

This August is a very special occasion for the Discovery mod and community - 20 years since our first public releases!
Over this time, Discovery has become an important part of many of our lives, whether that's thanks to fond memories going back to childhood, or from lifelong friends we've found among the community.
Whether you're someone who's been here from the beginning, or found this community more recently, we'd like you all to join us for a celebration of Discovery's long life and the thousands of players who have made it what it is today!
Several events have been arranged for you to enjoy, featuring a mixture of brand-new content, a callback to the past, and a guest spot from Discovery's very own creator, @Igiss!
Escape from Deep Omega
The Deep Omegas are a distant cluster of stars in the far south of the Walker Nebula - remote, dangerous, and largely unexplored.
You are a Freelancer, someone with no aspirations of groundbreaking discoveries or pushing back humanity's frontiers. You simply wanted to finish your cargo run and get paid. The last you remember, you were preparing to enter a Jump Hole in the Omegas, on your way to Planet Gran Canaria.
You awaken to sirens and the smell of smoke. You don't know where you are. Your ship is a wreck. Your NavCom screams of gravimetric hazards, and there is something in your cargo bay that was not there before. As you shake off the groggy confusion, you take in the sensor readings with horror:
You see the baleful eye that consumes all.
You must flee. You must escape the Deep Omegas.
Rules - The Deep Omegas will not be accessible until this event. During the event, there will only be one exit from the cluster, and no way in from outside.
- After the event, normal Deep Omega mechanics will be applied, with the entrance Jump Hole cycling daily between one of three different systems.
- On the day of the event, the special /restart OmegaSurvivor template will be made available. This will spawn you in space within the Deep Omegas.
- You will start in a heavily damaged freighter equipped only with a Mining Laser. This ship has the Explorer ID, which is a Freelancer ID with unique flavour text and a bespoke icon.
- This restart is placed in permadeath mode. Dying (whether you have docked or not) will send the character to Bastille.
- You must try and escape the Deep Omegas and reach Gran Canaria in Omega-49 to win. Successfully escaping to Gran Canaria allows you to claim the event's prize. - To receive the reward, your ship MUST be docked on Gran Canaria with the event cargo.
- Hint: There are spots scattered around the sector where less fortunate escapees met their end. You may be able to scavenge these for repairs or equipment.
- Hint: There are points of interest across the systems which may help or hinder you, but will provide insight into your circumstances and the Omega's fate.
- Hint: There may be some precarious safe harbours to be found where you can equip salvaged equipment.
Fleet Simulation - Royal Flush
For a decade, Liberty's military planners have concerned themselves primarily with piracy, and the suppression of the Insurgency and preceding movements. More recently, a new phrase has gripped Congress and Liberty's senior officers: peer adversary. Training syllabuses are being rapidly refreshed, and live fire exercises conducted in Colorado.
Despite this, these exercises are limited in size and scope by practicality. One place where no such limitations apply are the sophisticated simulations run by West Point. Calling on data captured from historic Liberty Navy campaigns, Operation Royal Flush is being meticulously recreated in virtual reality. In particular, war planners want to know how the current Navy would fare in a breaching attack against a fortified position held by a rival House.
While the blood spilled is digital, the pride of a modern cadre of Liberty officers rests on taking down the Battleship Oubli once again. Can this new generation surpass their predecessors?
Rules - The battle will take place in a special Leeds VR system, that replicates Leeds as of 2015.
- The battle lasts for approximately 1 hour. For the first 30 minutes, combatants can respawn in waves every 5 minutes (if your clock's minutes say 0 or 5, you can rejoin). For the second 30-minute period, death means you are done.
- For the day, the Gallic Navy will be renamed to the Gallic Royal Navy.
- Restarts will be provided for the LN, BAF and GRN (live at 4pm UTC). These are Camera Ships that start with $20mil.

- Liberty will base from Midway Depot, Bretonia from Battleship Harlow. Their objective is to destroy the titan Battleship Oubli in orbit of Planet Leeds.
- Gallic forces will base from Stokes Station, their objective is to kill as many Liberty ships as possible.
- All stations contain their faction's ships and equipment.
- Funds and characters cannot be transferred in or out of the system.
- Points can be used to claim prizes post-event, with official faction tagged characters earning extra points.
- The old-style SNAC will be reintroduced for this event only as a bomber heavy weapon.
Final Celebration - Conn Catchup Finally, we'll be hosting a roundtable discussion in Discord's Events Stage. This will be a talk and Q&A about the mod, with a panel of devs - guest starring mod founder, @Igiss!
While this is going on, we'd love to see as many as possible of you in Conn to hang out. Staff will be on hand to give out prizes through two contests:
- A Discovery Trivia quiz, where the first eligible correct callout wins a reward. One prize per participant.
- A ship parade, where you win a prize if you bring a unique ship. Staff will be checking off each ship they've seen on a central list, so either be quick, or be obscure!
Additionally, everyone who comes along for the Conn Catchup will be eligible for a unique 20th Anniversary Holo-roundel.
This isn't the notice we wanted to be making, but we're having to push back 5.3's release date by a week, to Friday 22nd of August. We really believed we'd have everything finished in time for tomorrow, but unfortunately there is still a few features that need finalizing and quality assurance that needs completing.
This is to make sure the initial server experience is as stable and polished as it can be (while also ensuring we have Top Men on hand for when something inevitably goes wrong).
The 30th of August is also a very special day for Discovery, being the 20th anniversary of our first public mod release. On that Saturday, we're going to be hosting an anniversary event to celebrate Discovery and it's extremely long history - along with a special guest. An event thread will be posted shortly with the details, but be sure to save the date!
Finally, we've also got a Singularity patch wallpaper produced by @Sombs , which I feel suits the gravity of this announcement. I'm not sorry about the pun, but I would like to apologise for the delay, as I know everyone has been getting hyped for the patch. It's nearly here though, and we're hitting the 22nd one way or another.
On the story side of things, I'll also be posting some more news articles to keep people occupied in the meantime.
Given some recent developments, we have decided to explicitly restate the following in our server rules:
1.1.4 - Threatening players with sanctions/reports and impersonating staff is not permitted.
While we encourage players to reach out to involved players in a rule violation in good faith efforts to resolve situations amicably before resorting to submitting violation reports, sometimes it will just not be possible. Nothing lost in game is real and everything (except time) can be restored. There is no need to get angry. Threats to file violation reports, especially in the context of trying to extort some sort of outcome, will only make things worse and will not be tolerated. Pretending to be a member of staff for any reason will also not be tolerated.
This policy has always been and will continue to be in force, but had been absorbed into 1.0 at some point.
