Fort Ramsey was first excavated in 807 AS to create additional space for the explosive growth of the Xeno movement. Xeno bases were suffering severely from overcrowding thanks to LPI crackdowns that had fueled radicalization and recruitment in Texas’ prisons. Ramsey quickly adopted the role of a quiet training ground for green recruits -- a role that was disturbed when Liberty began moving into the system two years later. The Xenos responded aggressively to the intrusion, targeting DSE ice miners that encroached too far into the Georgian Ice Field. In 824 AS, these same miners would become unexpected allies following a mutiny aboard Toronto Station. Protesting DSE engineers were attacked by Liberty Marines, resulting in the Toronto Massacre.

The rebel workers fled into the Ice Field and found refuge with the Xenos, quickly setting to work overhauling Ramsey’s workshops and excavating new facilities. The Fort received a second large boost in the aftermath of the Gallic War, as victorious Navy personnel returned home to a perfunctory discharge and mass-unemployment. These militants brought a professional edge to the Xenos that was previously sorely lacking. The blend of corporate and military influences aboard Ramsey resulted in a rigid, authoritarian culture that promoted discipline and obedience. This caused friction with the other Xeno clans who resented the domineering attitude of Ramsey’s leaders. Despite this, Ontario-trained squadrons remain in high demand across all Xeno operations.

Ramsey is also a hotbed of Xeno separatist ideologies, who see Ontario as the best candidate for their breakaway state. Separatists consistently advocated for expelling Liberty from Ontario, rather than waiting for the LSF to leave of its own accord. After almost a year of begging and bartering for manpower from the other clans, it was agreed an offensive would be launched in 835 AS. In the first example of Xeno fighters directly attacking a Liberty fleet in open space, massed waves of Xenos from across Liberty drove the Battlecruiser Lehigh out of the system and destroyed the Construction Ship Robert Peary. The victory came at a truly staggering cost, with Ramsey now preoccupied with restoring its depleted squadrons and paying its debts to the other clans.

[835 AS] LSF receives a black eye in Ontario

ONTARIO -- 835 -- For months, the Battlecruiser Lehigh has skulked around Ontario. Neither the Xenos or Lane Hackers were happy about having house guests, but it seems the Xenos were the ones to put their money where their mouth was. A tide of Xenos poured from the Georgian Ice Field, using suicidal waves to peck apart the heavy defenses with sheer numbers. Lehigh was sent packing with its tail between its legs in a major victory for the Xeno movement. “They laughed at us before, but no-one’s laughing now,” says veteran Xeno Hamish Garcia. The Lane Hackers avoided getting their hands dirty, but helped out by jamming Liberty’s comms and disrupting LSF transponders.

[835 AS] Leaks reveal Ontario alien technology

MANHATTAN -- 835 -- The neural net is abuzz with speculation and worry after sensor readings of an active alien facility in Ontario were widely distributed. The datafeed claims the source of an enormous beam of energy is an ancient alien ruin on Planet Sudbury. Inert alien ruins are often discovered in the remote Edge Worlds, enticing adventurers and scientific expeditions. According to professor Johan Miller of the Hammer Institute, the discovery of an active Daam-K’vosh site is “unprecedented”. In an attempt to reduce panic, government officials have confirmed that steps have been taken to secure Liberty’s borders, and reiterated that there is currently no threat to Liberty’s people.

[835 AS] Kusari is the enemy of Liberty’s workers

OURAY -- 835 -- The government is starting to wake up to the reality that Kusari isn’t Liberty’s friend. We’ve known that for centuries, since their goods shut down our factories, and their “keiretsu” killed our shipyards. When the corporations can’t use Kusari imports as a crutch, Liberty’s worker wins. War breaks this broken market, and it's our job to swing the hammer. The Navy are already crawling all over Colorado which makes our work difficult, but the Clan leaders are making plans to light the fuse on this powderkeg. Be ready for action, we strike soon.

[835 AS] Liberty and Kusari trade sanctions

DESHIMA -- 835 -- Liberty’s President Hawthorne has announced sanctions targeting key Kusari high-tech industries, blocking their access to advanced Superconductors and funding. This came following a “security incident” in the Independent Worlds, and a failed Farmers Alliance attack on Deshima Station, which Liberty says is part of a state-endorsed campaign of terrorism against its citizens. Kusari has dismissed the claim as “lurid nonsense”, and responded by banning the export of Optronics to Liberty until its “economic coercion” is ended. Liberty has vowed to increase pressure until Kusari takes steps to eradicate the Farmers Alliance and root out their backers.

[835 AS] Galileo on the brink

GALILEO -- 835 -- Following an unspecified “security incident” in the Independent Worlds, military forces in Colorado and Shikoku have been ordered to high alert. Observers have raised alarms as the Liberty Navy and Kusari Naval Forces surge to their respective borders, warning of a heightened risk of “accidental escalation” in Galileo. Despite urgent calls for information from local system representatives, the governments of Kusari and Liberty remain tight lipped, other than confirming Manhattan and New Tokyo were in “active dialogue”. Both Houses have since put traffic controls in place, and are actively stopping and searching shipping entering their mutual borders.

[834 AS] Fresh start, old baggage

PLANET ERIE -- 834 AS -- Many impoverished Liberty citizens have been flocking to Erie, looking for a fresh start. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done in Liberty. Dragged down by debts, criminal records, or a lack of jobs to go around, many have ended up resorting to crime to make ends meet. The Liberty Rogues and Xenos have both seen recruitment surge, as gangs take up the very profitable activities of smuggling and shakedowns. The Navy and LSF are mostly interested in squashing the Militants who want to topple the new governor, leaving breathing room for the common crook.

[834 AS] 'Slog': A New Enemy

LEYTE -– 834 -– The clans of Leyete say a new foreign poison is crossing the border. Some have asked how Slog is any different to Cardamine, arguing we can buy better guns and ships if we move quickly to grab this new market from the Rogues. Here's the difference: Cardamine is aimed at the treacherous Manhattan elites who betrayed us; a leash to bring them to heel. Slog is a Bretonian weapon of misery meant to cripple the blue collar of Liberty. Our brothers and sisters have already suffered enough humiliation. We will show no mercy to dealers and distributors in Liberty -- our fight here is personal.

[833 AS] LPI commissioner sentenced following Erie probe

PLANET ERIE -- 833 -- Helen O’Shea, Pennsylvania’s former LPI Commissioner, has been sentenced on corruption charges over the mismanagement of Erie’s planetary internment camps. The facilities were constructed to temporarily hold prisoners from the Liberty Insurgency while the courts cleared sentencing backlogs. Following allegations of human trafficking, the LSF launched a major investigation, discovering that as many as 10 percent of inmates were suspected of having been sold to traffickers. O’Shea is the latest and most high profile prosecution to date, and is expected to serve a ten year sentence at a minimum security penitentiary on Planet Los Angeles.

[831 AS] Lack of Cardamine, Liberty's Underworld Burns

When the convoys heading from Cali to Mactan and Buffalo thinned out - and even stopped for a brief moment - the underworld in Liberty literally imploded. Previously close alliances quickly fell apart to the displeasure of the Outcasts, and every part of the underworld in Liberty was desperately trying to get as much Cardamine for themselves as possible.

The Outcasts and their most loyal agents stepped in almost immediately in anticipation of something like this happening, and set new rules for distribution according to set keys. A small group of Liberty Rogues defied them and followed their own rules of distribution, but they didn't fare too well - the Dons, despite the ongoing crisis in Malta, do not tolerate insubordination.

For this reason, several powerful Junkers and Rogues immediately decided to dilute Cardamine instead of redistributing ostentatiously against the wishes of the Outcasts at the expense of their clients, thereby raising their own shares. Fortunately for these savvy businessmen, word did not reach the Outcasts until some time later, and thanks to an improved network of cooperation, most of the organizers were able evade Malta's assassins.

However, all these measures had only limited effectiveness. Many end-clients and casual Cardamine users have been forced to seek medical attention due to their deteriorating health due to potentially fatal withdrawal symptoms. It is not known how many Cardamine users eventually died because of the shortage, but it appears to be in the order of single-digit percentages - much to the very verbal displeasure of the Outcasts themselves.

[831 AS] Jump Hole Upheaval Causes Chaos

HEISENBERG -- 831 AS -- Jump holes across Sirius have become increasingly volatile and chaotic over the last year, with Professor Sophia Nagel from the Heisenberg Research Station linking the unusual phenomena to the Pulse. The Pulse was an unprecedented blast of hyperspace energy that was detected immediately prior to last year's Jump Gate Blackout.

Professor Nagel and her team are certain the Pulse originated from outside Sirius, but are otherwise no closer to identifying its source or mitigating a future Blackout event. "Following the Blackout, we began to see immediate signs of jump hole destabilization in multiple different regions, with many ultimately falling out of phase alignment altogether", she commented. The dramatic upending of Sirius' jump hole network has already prompted many groups to abandon stations and withdraw from systems that appear to risk being cut off.

While months-long trips between the stars are possible thanks to the Liberty Engine and many centuries of innovation, few ships are designed or provisioned to make such arduous journeys. Those who were displaced by Sirius' redrawn map hope that system connections will return, while adventurers and explorers rush to discover new routes.

[831 AS] Caught in their own trap?

BARRIER GATE -- 831 -- Word is the Xenos have a Cardamine problem. Recruiting from the bottom of Liberty society, most Xenos lived in poverty and decided to lash out. Now they’ve got a foot in the door with the Cardamine trade and their leaders are having issues keeping the grunts out of the goods, after that first taste of luxury. Witnesses report one such incident aboard Barrier Gate, after a Xeno executed a green wingman who’d used the product he was supposed to be shipping. Even if you’re only in the trade for business, the GC and Rogues can tell you there’s always a catch in the contract.

[830 AS] Rampant human trafficking on Erie

ERIE -- 830 AS -- Scandal has rocked Planet Erie after videos leaked of LPI guards loading Insurgency prisoners onto Freelancer Vincent Ruthen’s Dromedary freighter. Public records indicate Ruthen has prior convictions for trafficking, while the freighter's manifest falsely claimed it was shipping Neon to Planet Denver. Outraged Zoner communities claim this is the "tip of the iceberg", describing widespread abuse at LPI operated internment camps. A Police official denounced the allegations of corruption, stating that "all prisoner transfers have been conducted within the framework of the legal code". He refused to comment on the evidence presented. The Erie Interim Administration has formally requested the LSF investigate the situation.

[830 AS] Liberty underworld bolstered by Insurgency survivors

FONTANA -- 830 AS -- The Liberty Insurgency dramatically exploded following Liberty's invasion of Vespucci, with the human wreckage now scattered across Liberty's underworld. While some slunk away into the crowds of Planet Erie or the obscurity of foreign Freeports, others sought refuge with the Liberty Rogues, Xenos, or Technocracy. Those survivors are now having to prove their worth with their new hosts, with the Xenos in particular having an extremely rocky history with the Insurgency and its predecessors. More than anything else, these pariahs provide an object lesson on the risks of fighting Liberty head-on.

[830 AS] Liberty annexes Planet Erie

PLANET ERIE -- 830 -- The Liberty Navy has launched Operation PESTICIDE to annex Pennsylvania, following the collapse of talks between Liberty and Zoner authorities. President Hawthorne declared that Liberty could no longer tolerate a "lawless frontier" within its very core, and that the Zoners had repeatedly refused to extradite criminals and terrorists from the Pennsylvania protectorate. The recent destruction of an LSF satellite was the straw that broke the camel's back. Militias congregating around Planet Erie were routed following the Zoner Carrier Pinnacle’s destruction. The Battleship Alma then secured Erie’s orbit and landed Marines to impose Liberty law on Lake City. Surviving militants have vowed to resist Erie’s occupation.

[830 AS] Trouble in paradise on Erie

PLANET ERIE -- 830 AS -- Since the destruction of Williamstown Depot near Planet Tremont, Liberty and Erie's autonomous Zoner government have been locked in a standoff. Liberty has long suspected the Insurgency attack on its logistics station was facilitated by informants on Erie, and has accused the Zoners of allowing Insurgency and Xeno operatives to roam the planet with "impunity". This morning, a missile streaked from Erie's wilderness, shooting down an orbiting LSF satellite that had been tracking "terrorist activities". Liberty has accused Zoner militias of the attack, and ordered Erie authorities to hand over the perpetrators, and all Insurgency affiliates. Zoners have denied responsibility, calling the attack a “Liberty false flag”.

[829 AS] The orange path to power

OURAY -- 830 -- Our persistence has paid off. Despite suffering hundreds dead to Outcast retaliation over the last 3 years, the De Angelis cartel have seen sense. The northern Clanheads have agreed a deal on Cardamine, cutting us into the De Angelis network. Ouray has already made plans with Freelancers from Fontana Freeport to smuggle goods into New York through the Jersey Debris Field. We’ll also use our contacts with the work gangs on Pittsburgh to get doses onto Manhattan with commuting mining crews. The Rogues and Junkers will try to stop us, but there’s too much at stake. This is the Xenos’ road to power.

[829 AS] Freedom at last

FORT RAMSEY -- 829 AS -- Liberty has finally decided to bend rather than break and put an end to their exploitation of Ontario. Now the Xenos are free to conduct ourselves openly and reinforce the backbone of this great cause. The only thing in our way anymore are those loathsome Junkers and whoever they've paid off. Once they're gone too this system will stand tall as the heart of the Liberty Free Republic.

[829 AS] Prison rumble

FONTANA FREEPORT -- 829 AS -- Liberty's underworld is abuzz with the shocking news that the LPI's infamous Attica Supermax prison has been... stolen. It's still unclear what happened there, but the LPI seem to have washed their hands of the situation, and left the Rogues and Xenos to brawl over an alleged mass breakout. What is known is the Attica Supermax prison is no longer where it should be, and the LPI is locking down that side of the system with a phony story about training exercises.

[828 AS] Underworld meeting goes sour

BARRIER GATE -- 827 -- Patrons were forced to dive for cover when a meeting on Barrier Gate’s Orange Deck went south. A delegation of Xenos met with Outcasts to “bury the hatchet” over recent attacks on the Cardamine trade. “I didn’t hear what they said, but the Outcast Donna laughed in their face, then all hell broke loose”, said Lucky Stevens. “It was a massacre. The Xenos didn’t stand a chance.” The Xenos recently knocked out Rochester Base, with most guessing they’re trying to cut into the drugs trade. One anonymous Xeno noted, “eventually they’ll see it’s better to have us in the tent and pissing out, than out the tent and pissing in.”

[827 AS] A statement of intent

LIBERTY ROSE -- Today the Xeno Northern Alliance struck a blow against the Junkers of New York. A plan 20 years in the making, the newly restored Liberty Rose was used as a battering ram to knock down Rochester’s doors. The Rose’s unexpected arrival drew a lot of attention, causing panic among the Junkers. Using this distraction, Xeno bombers landed several torpedoes on Rochester, badly damaging it. They’ll be out of commission for the foreseeable, giving us a window to muscle in on their turf. The Rose was badly damaged in the battle, but we’ve successfully withdrawn her back to Ontario for assessment and repairs.

[817 AS] Houston workers flock to the cause

BARROW -- 816 -- Chemical Fertilizer workers on Houston have been kicked in the teeth after Synth Foods outsourced their jobs to Rheinland. Liberty stood by and let the layoffs roll in, so now betrayed workers turn to us. The Xenos know what it's like to be kicked to the bottom, and we welcome these new brothers and sisters to the struggle as we fight our way to the top. The Houston clans are already training up these chemical workers as bomb makers and preparing them for the fight to come. Soon Houston will be a no-go zone for any foreign shipper.

Rumors

Xenos
  • The Xenos once had an alliance with The Hellfire Legion, but that fell apart after the Liberty Commonwealth stabbed us in the back. The colony hidden away in Vespucci could have been a rebirth of Liberty for Libertonians. Instead they welcomed in the dregs from Leeds to “set up industry”. The same damn playbook DSE and the Navy used on Toronto. When the clans objected, the Commonwealth threw us out. So we took Hesperia and made sure neither the Legion nor the Insurgency that replaced it could threaten us in our space.

  • The Fort was excavated in 807 AS -- a pretty small operation at first, crewed by a wave of recruits the other clans didn’t have room for. We came into our own with the capture of the Alabama, asserting Ramsey as an independent clan with its own voice. The factories came from the engineers fleeing the Navy massacre aboard Toronto Station, while the influx of pilots and soldiers who were laid off after the Gallic War created a cadre of experienced leaders and instructors.

  • For centuries the Xenos have attacked foreign shipping and called for the return of Liberty industries for Liberty workers. Manhattan scoffs, and says Liberty workers are too expensive, too lazy, too inexperienced. Well, Liberty industry fuels our war against their attempt to kick the working man and woman to the bottom. Ramsey represents the legacy Liberty left behind all those years ago, and proves that all we need is blood, sweat, and willpower.

  • I work in maintenance. Might not seem like much, but you try preventing the structural collapse of a monorail line with half the tools you need. The big issue is keeping an eye on the heat load going into the ice from the factories. Too high and you get expansion that can crack habitats, warp rails, and collapse tunnels. Venting helps, but sticks out on sensors like a firework. Sometimes the only option is to down tools for a while and let the ice settle.

  • If you’re looking for Cardamine, there’s not much to be found here. This is a “hostile market” so to speak. A lot of it is dropped off by the Outcasts at Leyte in Magellan, then shipped to Ouray in Colorado. Other Outcasts head directly to Ouray through the Barrier Pass. There’s a lot of ex-Navy on Ramsey, old habits must die hard. Any Outcasts stopping over for fuel tend to move on quick.

  • The Liberty Rose was once the Battleship Alabama. She was sent to Ontario to uproot the Xenos and stomp us out -- same playbook as the LPI in Colorado. It took everything we had to lure her into the Georgian Ice Field and stop that from happening. For decades she’s been whispered about on the Neural Net as a ghost ship that disappeared without a trace. After the Lehigh got away, I suppose Liberty is now very much aware of her actual fate.

  • The Fort’s not been here long enough to have too many of its own home-growns, but the biggest Xeno clans have been around for almost two centuries. They’ve all come up with their own ideas and ideologies, and rarely agree with one another. In some ways, local spirit makes the Xenos strong and hard to stop -- in others, it keeps us divided. We’d achieve a lot more if we could unify our strength -- look at what we achieved with the Lehigh.

  • Visitors from the other clans are always surprised at how much space there is here. The Xenos grew explosively after the Colony Wars, so every base was overcrowded and cramped, from Barrow to Nome. Ramsey was carved out to relieve pressure, as Ontario was a quiet backwater where the clans could meet and train without too much attention. There’s even more free space now, after the battle for the Jump Gate...

  • It's a hard case of bad luck if you get assigned quarters near the factories. Damn things never stop working and the production queues for ships and weapons are probably backed up for more years than I've got left to live. Most of them are run by ex-DSE techs that joined us after the Toronto Massacre. Just goes to show, Liberty will bring down the axe on anyone if they think they can save a credit.

  • Fighting off the Alabama is what really catapulted Ramsey forward. Not only did we realize what we were truly capable of, but we got a close look at a whole heap of wrecked Defenders. That kind of Military Salvage teaches you a thing or two about how to build things better, and coincidentally, how to more efficiently gut an enemy's hardware. Until recently, we never had the resources to make use of those ideas. Now, you see what happens when we do.

  • The LSF are still skulking around Sudbury, doing something to that alien shield there. Scouts say the battlecruiser is the Tuscaloosa, on an errand from those lousy Congressmen on Manhattan. It’s keeping a pretty low profile after we took down the Robert Peary and Lehigh at the Jump Gate. We’d like to see the Tuscaloosa chased off too, but the other clans went home after the battle. With the losses we took, it’ll be a while before we'd stand a chance on the offensive.

  • I'm from Milford, on a supply run to Ouray. It's a bit of a journey so I often stop at Ramsey to refuel and see what's on offer. The locals have a pole up their butt, and expect you salute and play pretend navy if you want to get along. I wouldn’t want to live here, but it seems to be working for them, given how the fight at the Jump Gate went. Even if they’re real bastards to work with, I’d rather have Ramsey’s fighters on my wing, than on my six.

  • We're as effective as we are because of our commitment to discipline and efficiency. The other clans resent us for our hierarchies and structure, whining that order and authority are infringements of their liberty and independence. We understand that you need discipline to build an army, and it’ll take an army to defend the Liberty Free Republic. One day they'll thank us for our sacrifices.

  • Are you from Barrow? For your sake I hope not, there’s years of bad blood between our groups. The Ouray and Milford clans don’t get it -- so far as they’re concerned, both Barrow and Ramsey are hardcore Separatists rather than Reformers. Best pals, right? But the only thing I hate more than a Reformer, is a Separatist who’s wasting our time and blood on some foolish project in Hudson. The Liberty Free Republic is Ontario.

  • Many of our forebears were disgruntled veterans who left the Navy after Jacobi refused to make Rheinland pay reparations for the Colony Wars. They were sick of Liberty letting the other Houses walk all over us. If Congress is too cowardly to protect its own people, then the people will be forced to remake Liberty themselves. Separatists think Liberty is too rotten to save and a breakaway state is needed, while Reformers think we should kick out foreign corporations and the Manhattan elite to right the sinking ship.

  • I remember meeting this girl on Ames years ago. She was obviously from Kusari -- a Chrysanthemum, I think. We both agreed that Samura was poisoning our Houses and laughed about killing Bounty Hunters. We were going to meet up again a month later, maybe find out what else we agreed on. Guess the universe hates my guts because that’s when the storm swept through Kepler. She seemed like one of the good ones. I wonder if she still thinks about me?

  • Apparently the beam from Sudbury hit Coronado, one of the moons there. I heard stories about dead alien ruins in the border worlds as a kid. Nothing like this thing -- whatever is on Sudbury is very much alive. I’ve looked at the sensor feeds, and Sudbury is putting out the energy of a star. People are going mad speculating on the neural net, so I’ve made some credits on the side by selling sensor clips to userboards.

  • Liberty could have used its brilliance to rule the sector as the undisputed first among Houses. But she naively shared her gifts and allowed the other Houses to exploit her for centuries. Our generosity was met with the theft of the Jump Gates and Trade Lanes, with exploitative mineral dumping that crippled our industry. On this base we have a simple motto: Liberty was the first and victory is hers by right.

  • The Outcasts laughed at us when we first demanded a cut of the Cardamine market. They started paying attention after we put a hole in Rochester and shut down their distribution network. Now, that was bad attention at first -- their assassins filled a lot of body bags before they calmed down enough to talk. Luckily the clanheads on Ouray convinced them they’d earn more with Xenos pushing demand up, and forcing the Junkers to compete for worse terms.

  • The Cardamine trade is a revolting abomination, feeding the degeneracy of the Manhattan elite. Most of us on Ramsey hate it, especially those who came here from the Navy. The clanheads all say that it is a necessary evil for funding the movement, and one day, for leashing those Manhattan elites to our will. We need the credits, but this compromise sickens me to my stomach. I’d rather die fighting, poor but honest. Unless we're careful, we'll end up no better than the Rogues.

  • Ramsey’s workshops produce a lot of the equipment the movement needs to fight and operate -- especially Rebel fighters. The other clans hit foreign shipping and trade us the materials we need. We used to discreetly barter off everything else to the Zoners or IMG, but Kepler and Freeport 4 aren’t exactly options any more. Bristol will sometimes fence hot goods, especially the bunch that are stealing Platinum from Galileo. Hardly perfect, but it's a start.

  • When Sudbury woke up, it let out this damn awful blast of energy. That fried all our external sensors and scrambled most of the onboard computers too. We’ve had eyes on Sudbury since then, as an early warning for any other hostile events. When we picked up the power spikes before the beam fired, we turned off everything at Ramsey and went dark for three hours. Wouldn’t you know it, there was another pulse, but our stuff was fine this time.

  • We take on recruits from most of the other clans for training. Even more now, thanks to the favors we owe for their recent support. There's plenty of space in the new habitat block they're excavating down in district 7... plus all the empty dorms after the attack on the Lehigh. Of course, anyone who wants to serve here is expected to pull their own weight and follow orders. If you ain’t got the discipline for it, you won’t last long.

  • The Outcasts want us to think they’re this perfect and unified superior species, better than us boring old humans. But from what I see it's the smaller families and new money that are trading Cardamine to Ouray. The old cartels that work the Rogues and Hackers despise us. They only calmed down when the Cardamine market crashed a few years back. Wherever it is they come from, there’s human politics there too.
