CARDAMINE
Cardamine is a naturally occurring complex chemical found in orange coloured grasses in the unique ecosystem of the planet Malta. The Outcasts are known for growing more concentrated varieties of this grass on their plantations and distributing it further into Sirius. Cardamine has strong stimulant effects on its users, which are enhanced by the fact that the body does not build up a tolerance to it. However, it is notorious for quickly creating an irreversible chemical dependency in its users and altering the DNA of its users. With long-term use, Cardamine eliminates the risk of degenerative diseases in its users and cancer. Cardamine also increases fitness in its users, which translates into an extended lifespan of ten to twenty years on average.
For the Outcasts who were born on the planet Malta, Cardamine has more beneficial effects. In general, the Outcasts enjoy several times longer lifespans thanks to this substance, and are faster, stronger, tougher, more intelligent, and in some cases more attractive compared to ordinary humans and long-term Cardamine users. The downside for them, however, is a significantly lower fertility rate, which severely limits their population growth compared to the rest of Sirius, and the fact that they must return to the planet Malta periodically for their long-term survival, as for significantly altered individuals like them, the mere use of Cardamine is no longer enough.
The Outcasts distribute Cardamine in two main forms. The gaseous form is cheaper, less refined, easier and safer to take through special breathing masks and inhalers, and is the most common form of the drug in Sirius. The more expensive, concentrated and refined liquid form of Cardamine is for intravenous use by users who find inhalers inconvenient or cannot afford them because of the secrecy of their addiction.
